I’ve been on pins and needles all weekend worrying about my parents-in-law. I know that if Tony were here he would have tried to get them to evacuate, but I know my father-in-law wouldn’t have listened to him. He’s set in his ways, they have been through hurricane “type” weather before, their house was built to withstand a Category 4 storm, they had food and water and they were just going to ride it out.
I last spoke to them around 11:00 a.m. yesterday morning and they had already been without power for a few hours. I didn’t want to talk to them too long to drain what cell phone battery they had, but I texted them a few times throughout the afternoon and evening and got no response. This morning I googled “ariel view of Naples after Irma” that picture above was one of the first that popped up.
Happily I woke up this morning to a text from my MIL Bonnie “We are fine. No power, but all in great shape.” Thank goodness!!
Can anyone explain to me how when you think that you are going to have a gain, you have a loss, and when you think you killed it, you have a gain?!! I dodged a bullet last week with a loss of .4. I have to be extra careful this week so that any residual indescretions I had last week don’t show up on the scale this week.
I didn’t go to the meeting until 10, so after running a bunch of errands I didn’t finally eat anything until nearly noon. I had two slices of avocado bread for 10 smart points.
Hannah has a new employee that moved to town with her boyfriend. Sadly, her boyfriend broke up with her, but for financial reasons they have to still live together. He flat out told her that she had to find someplace else to stay Saturday night because his brother was spending the night. She has a key to the coffee shop because she opens, and had planned on sleeping there.
Hannah called and asked if she could sleep at our house, and of course I said yes. We were going to dinner at the place we think we are going to have Hannah and Jacob’s wedding shower and invited her along. She’s a very sweet girl (I think she’s 23) and at the end of the dinner she handed me $7 and asked if that was enough to contribute to dinner. I told her to keep it, but as we were leaving she said “If you find $7 laying around your house after I leave, I have no idea how it got there!”
Tony and I used to go to this restaurant all the time, so when I realized I had points for a Boddington’s beer, I got that. Their food prices are rediculously cheap – this sirloin steak kabob with Asian slaw was only $8.95, and perfectly cooked.
On Friday night, having only 4 smart points left for dinner, I made this zucchini ribbon shrimp dish – but the most questions I got asked was “where did you buy the zucchini ribbons.” All I did was use a vegetable peeler.
I made this giant breakfast pizza – lavash bread (2) leftover beef (3) egg whites (1) and feta cheese (3).
Just bake at 425 for 10 minutes. I baked it on my baking steel and it was perfect. So filling though, I only ate 3/4 of it.
Oh, and add a point for the bacon 😀
Longtime readers will remember that several years ago I had two squirrels who would frequent our front desk and would literally take peanuts out of my hand.
I was playing frisbee with the dogs in the back yard when all of a sudden out of my woods comes these two tiny squirrels. I thought for sure Roman and Rummy would attack them so I quickly grabbed the dogs with Jacob’s Dad who was over for Sunday dinner and got the dogs in the house. They were shaking, but kept walking to my gazebo.
I still had a bag of apples from my friends house by the back door, and bit off pieces for them to eat.
Then one of them jumped into the bag of apples! It was all fun until one of them jumped at me! I texted Hannah pictures and videos as she was on her way home from work, and I knew she would want to keep them. Before she got home, one wandered back off into the woods.
Hannah did a quick google search on “how to take care of baby squirrles” and she read that they have to be kept at 99 degrees to stay warm. She immediately got a towel and put the squirrel in there. Next, she microwaved a soft t-shirt and put the squirrel in that, and it immediately fell asleep.
She’s going to take it to our local animal shelter today. She read that if the Momma doesn’t come back to the babies within two hours, it most like won’t come back.
Or I’ll come home tonight and she will still have it! She named it Pickles 😀
I forgot to announce a winner for my 9 year blogavarsary!! Using random integer, the winner of the magazine subscription is:
I really enjoy your posts and pics!
Glad your in laws are ok with very little damage .So much devastation from these hurricanes! Your Lavash flatbread pizza looks soooo good. Yum!
I was glued to the TV the entire couple days before Irma. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and have friends and fam there. We’re supposed to go to Marco and Hollywood, FL next month too.
Hey Biz
I ??? squirrels.
When I was little my dad was a tree man and he cut down a tree with 2 baby squirrels. He left them overnight and when he went back the next day, there was no sign of the mom so he brought them home.
My mom bottle fed them and as they got older they would run all over the living room. My grandfather even built them a huge cage for the front yard. We kept them until someone complained and they went to stay in the country with my grandparents.
Then we let them loose in our yard and for years they would come to the front porch and still eat snacks from my mom’s hand.
🙂
That’s the best story!! Sadly, Pickles didn’t make it – not sure where we went wrong, we fed it, gave it water and kept it warm 🙁
Glad your parents in law are safe and sound. Irma was really nasty to Florida.
That baby squirrel, squee!!!
My MIL said that the area around them looks like a war zone, so I am so thankful!
Glad your parent in laws are safe! Hope you have a nice day.
They lost a few tiles and had a tiny rip in their lanai screen – so lucky!!!
Baby squirrels… so sweet!
(p.s. I find that I sometimes have a loss if I had a couple of drinks – dehydration, but sometimes a gain if I ate just fine because of sodium – i.e. HOT SAUCE! 🙂 )
One time I had deli ham, sauerkraut, mustard and pickles and I gained two pounds overnight! 😛
