I wasn’t sure how long my MRI results were going to last yesterday morning, so I snuck in a quick 20 minute walk before work. My knee hurt a little bit the first few minutes, but then it was fine. Um, note my pajama pants (coffee stains and all – ha!). It was pretty windy and about 34 degrees when I left.
With my leftover steak from the night before and 3 ounces of a leftover twice baked potato from Easter, I made a steak and potato hash, with an egg white and spinach scramble on the side. Wouldn’t be complete without some dashes of Frank’s hot sauce, am I right?!
My appointment took 40 minutes – gah. It’s right across the street from my office – I left my desk at 9:28 for a 9:30 appointment and got there right on time. The doctor? He came in 20 minutes later.
First of all he said “nice legs!” Ha, I am kidding, he didn’t say that, but he said basically there was no meniscus tear, no cartilage tear, just . . . “an old knee.” He said there was some degeneration in that knee, and he gave me a Cortisone shot and scheduled me for physical therapy. Apparently in the last month my knee has been bothering me, I’ve switched my walking to favor the right side of my body, and I am kind of out of sync. He said after that I should be good as new – oh and that I don’t stretch enough! Oops. Yep, I used to be so good about that – remember me talking about Classical Stretch a few years ago? I’ve gotten a new DVR box since I recorded those shows, but I need to get back to stretching every day.
It was quite a relief to know that I didn’t have to have any kind of surgery, so I hope with the PT and stretching, I’ll be just fine for my Spartan race – I have no goal other than to finish it, so fingers crossed my training continues to go well.
I defrosted a package of chicken breasts over the weekend and just cooked them up with a bit of salt and pepper and I would decide what to make with them later in the week. I decided on tacos, duh. Probably my second favorite thing to eat after pizza. My boss asked if I could pick her up a salad at Mariano’s, and I ended up spending .47 cents to accessorize my tacos with mixed peppers, shredded radish and black beans. I couldn’t decide which picture to post, so you’ll get both. You’re welcome.
With the fruit, that plate above comes in at 551 calories, 15.5 fat, 59 carbs, 11 fiber and a whopping 45 grams of protein. So fricken good – and topped with my baja fresh salsa that I made over the weekend, first batch of the season!
As the day progressed, my knee kept feeling better and better so I went to the gym after work. Still not doing any of the lower body strength exercises yet, so yesterday was back and triceps. It took me 35 minutes to that (5 sets, 10 reps each!) and abs on the ball, then finished off with a 5k on the treadmill while watching Man v. Food.
While cleaning out the freezer I noticed I had frozen ground turkey and about a 12 ounce London broil. Huh. I wondered if I could combine them in a dish, when it popped into my head – chili! This made 8, one cup servings:

So with my before work and after work workouts, I got in quite a bit of steps!
And I have a quick favor to ask – my bosses daughter is doing a Relay for Life race this weekend and she is looking for donations – she’s a super smart, nice kid – I’ve known her since she was 8 years old and now she’s a month away from finishing her freshman year at University of Rochester! Since Tony was a cancer survivor, and my Dad and cousin Pam passed away from cancer, events like this are close to my heart. If you can spare $10 or so, you can find Ally’s link here. I would appreciate it!
Alright, time to head out on my morning walk – make it a great day!
Have to say… those tacos with 45 grams of protein looked really yummy.. as did the chili.. printed off the Baja salsa recipe…
Glad your knee isn’t anything too serious! Hopefully the cortisone shot and stretching will make it good as new! 🙂
So far so good Erin – I have to email you and see how you are doing!
Glad you don’t need surgery! I’m surprised that you could workout after that shot – I’ve heard they are painful!!
I might be doing a race in Chicago the end of October – maybe if I time everything right we could meet:)
OMG, coming to Chicago! Hells yes, I’ll meet up with you! 😀
I hope the cortisone helps! I had it once in my ankle. I’d had surgery to repair the ligament and after 10 months of pain post-surgery the doc gave me the shot. It was horrible and painful but it freakin’ worked!!
The shot didn’t hurt at all, but I do have a high threshold for pain. It feels amazing 😀
Compensating on one side for the other will get you – and gets me – every single time!
Do whatever the PT tells you to do, even if it seems like it’s not helping. I’m sure you’ll be feeling better in no time.
Thanks for the advice Helen!
So glad nothing super serious is wrong with your knee, hopefully between the shot and the therapy that will help!
off to donate now! 🙂
Thanks for the donation Courtney! I appreciate it. Hope the reno is going well in your neck of the woods, never a dull moment for you!
Your field hockey and track and field days are making their presence known in your knees. athletics has that affect. glad the cortisone helps, just don’t get caught in the cortisone routine tho – I’ve found doctors to be very cortisone friendly (just my personal opinion) I stopped cortisone shots and focused on consistent stretching/PT. I am glad you are able to get out and walk and do the tings you like. Happy Spring, it looks like it is coming for sure.
You are probably right Jody – I guess I forgot that I played field hockey since it was 30 years ago – Wow, did I just say that out loud?! Hugs!
Anytime something bothers me while I run, I inevitably end up messing up the other leg because of compensation. Stretching will help, and that PT should do wonders for both sides. Glad it’s nothing serious!
Yep, the shot is making everything feel better – just wish I didn’t have to wait until April 20 to start PT, but it’s better than nothing! I’ve been doing my stretches which have helped too. 😀
I’m so jealous of your pj pants!!! I heart pink and manatees!!
I think I have the same knee problem as you. Mine started much earlier and from all the testing that I’ve done, the diagnosis seems to be “old knee.” Sometimes I push myself too far in my workouts and it flares up, but most days it’s fine. Definitely liveable and though some days it may deter me from doing something, I just work around it. Hope the cortisone shot helps!
Jenn, it feels amazing – the first time in weeks that I didn’t wake up with knee pain! I haven’t been running, because I think that does too much damage to my knees because of my weight, but I love walking and am just fine with that. I bought my pants at a thrift store – shocker! 😀
Glad to hear it’s “just” an old knee, could have been worse. I love it that you went outside in your pyama’s. I always walk Bella in my sweat pants on my last round. I don’t care what people think.
You know I have been thinking about you a lot the past days. You know why?
Because you are my blogger friend who loves cooking most of all my friends.
So I was looking for something on the internet and I found 2 food bloggers from the Netherlands. Even though it’s in Dutch check it out to get an impression. You know they make a living by just blogging and testing products. They even get trips to go to. I think it’s amazing that even in the Netherlands you can live from blogging and I think if you should make a food blog you could make money of it too.

This one has 25,000 unique visitors every day and 2,5 million pageviews a month. Can you imagine that? She has 24,000 people liking her facebook page and just finished her book.

This one is like me: as a kid she didn’t cook much, later she used a lot of processed foods like me and now uses as less processed foods as possible like me. She is now on a trip to Vietnam to see how they treat panga fish. She got invited for that.
I really think you should look into foodblogging and earn some money with it. And remember to thank me in your biography with your succes story after a couple of years 🙂
Thanks for the links Fran, I will definitely check them out. It’s really hard to make a living from a blog my size – I get about 50,000 page views a month, which is small potatoes – I’d have to work just as hard on the blog as if it were my job to get it to the next level. I appreciate it though!
Be prepared for some very high blood sugar numbers from the cortisone shot, my husband has a time getting thing straight after that shot. Good luck and glad it’s not a serious injury.
My doctor warned me about that, but I was okay – I typically test my blood sugar six – eight times a day. Sorry your hubs has the sugars! 🙁
