Hey guys! It’s back to reality as I am on the train headed to work. Our plane was delayed coming home last night, so we didn’t get home until after 10:00 p.m. and I haven’t even downloaded my pictures yet.
Last Wednesday our car was picking us up to go to the airport at 9:00 a.m., so guess who got up and did 60 minutes of Insanity? Me! However, while I was working out, it kept getting darker and darker outside, and we had some major storms roll through.
But by the time the car came, it had blown over, or so we thought. Not even ten minutes after leaving the house, the rain was coming in sideways it was so stormy. However, for some reason, our driver never turned on her windshield wipers. I am a horrible back seat drive by nature – just ask Hannah. I just kept my head down and kind of came to the realization that I may just die in this Cadillac Escalade before I even make it to the airport.
We arrive in plenty of time. The kadults were smart and packed smaller carry on bags. Did I do that? Nope. So I had to wait in line for an hour not only to check my bags, but to then get through security. Hannah kept texting me, “you are making me nervous Mom!” I still made it to the gate in plenty of time, only to discover that our plane was delayed. And then it got delayed again. So we went to lunch, where we got a text that it was delayed again. In the end, around 4:00 p.m., our flight was finally cancelled and we had to fly out early the next morning at 5:00 a.m. – but now flying through Philadelphia instead of a straight flight.
We had a decision to make. Call a car service to take us 45 minutes back home, wake up at the crack of dawn to get back to the airport, or just decided to grab a hotel near the airport and wait it out. My sister did a quick priceline check and grabbed us two rooms a couple miles from the airport. I checked in, Hannah and Jacob decided to nap, so I walked for an hour in the tiny hotel gym while watching FoodTV. When I woke up that morning, I never would have guessed that I’d spend my first night on vacation in a hotel 45 minutes from my house in Schiller Park!
Since we didn’t have a car and there were no close restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, we ate in the hotel restaurant/bar. The food was actually really good – I got a burger, and skipped the bun.
We finally made it to my Aunt’s house after picking up the rental car at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, nearly 24 hours after we were supposed to get there. I guess the only silver lining is that it happened on the way TO vacation vs. coming home. I missed a day of work a couple years ago when my Mom and I were coming back from Key West when our flight got cancelled.
On the way to my Aunt’s house, since we had eaten breakfast so early, we stopped at Hardee’s – I got the chicken fingers (6) with green beans (2) – I don’t know what Hardee’s puts on their green beans but they are delicious!
My brother and his family and my Mom had made it the day before, so it was nice to have everyone together. My Aunt had a big beef tenderloin and asked if I’d grill it for dinner. A strange thing happened as I was cutting into this glorious medium rare beef – nearly everyone in my brothers family (my brother didn’t eat any beef!) and my Aunt like their beef well done! What the what?! Thankfully, while I cooked it medium rare (for me, my Mom and Jacob!) I just put the sliced beef back on the grill to cook it to everyone’s taste.
I made my steak into a salad – yum!
My favorite thing of the whole vacation – besides the family reunion, was just floating in the water. I also tried paddle boarding – I loved it, but it’s harder than it looks!
I’ll download my pictures tonight and will continue the vacation pics in tomorrow’s post. I am hitting publish so I can catch up on your blogs the rest of the train ride into work – it was nice to be away from social media for a few days!
Make it a great day!
Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation! I haven’t been on social media much the past 3 weeks and don’t feel like I missed much. Now that I’m back at work I’m very busy with work and often don’t have time to check FB or IG till I’m finished at home after dinner and that doesn’t feel weird at all. Think I will continue not to check FB/IG that often anymore.
I can’t wait to hear about your SUP experience!! My husband and I want to try them on our vacation at the end of August
Sounds like a great vacation. Can’t believe you are so disciplined u walked an hour first night of your vacay!! Wow! At hotel!!
I was too wound up to just sit in the hotel room – figured I’d just walk it out! That was about the end of my exericse for the weekend, except for paddle boarding and swimming š
Missed you. Glad your back
Storms were crazy – we got hit real bad here in Lake County – roads are still closed and places are still evacuated. Lincolnshire Marriott and Lake Forest Hospital had to evacuate.
Can’t wait to hear all about your trip!
Those storms were insane! Since we left before the second round of storms came through, I thought for sure that we’d get a call from Jacob’s Mom who was watching the dogs, tell us that we lost another tree!
Travel, especially airline travel, just isn’t what it used to be. I have to disagree with you though – I’d rather miss a day of work than a day of vacation lol!
I was in line behind a guy on the flight the next day – he was supposed to fly back to Boston the day our flight got cancelled and was put on the last flight out – and then got bumped. By then almost all the hotels were booked, so he spent $500 for a Hilton within walking distance of O’Hare – only to check in at 11:30 p.m. and check out at 3:00 a.m. – crazy! And true, I guess I’d rather miss a day of work than vacation!
Traveling can be so rough – we end up flying out of D/FW airport quite a bit and the weather there can ground planes as well. Hopefully the rest of the vacation made up for the crazy start!
It’s just so weird that my Mom, who was flying United, was able to get out and we weren’t. The rest of the travel was uneventful – only our return flight was delayed by an hour. š
That is a rough start to a trip, but glad you had a good time once you got there.
Just a little blip on the radar in the whole grand scheme of things – we had money to stay at a hotel, food to eat and a free shuttle to the airport the next day – it was all good!
Welcome back!! You were missed. I spent the night of my 40th birthday sleeping in the Detroit airport because my flight to FL was cancelled. It sucked!! I’ll always remember it though : )
What hotel did you end up in? J and I are flying in on Sept 16th, driving straight to Milwaukee. Coming back to Chicago on Tues, the 19th, flying out the next morning. I need to find a hotel for the night. I need a hotel with a shuttle( or I guess I can uber). I need to return the rental car the night before we fly out.
Hey Randi! Aw, that sucks that you spend your 40th in Detroit – and the airport no less! We stayed at the Quality Inn on Mannheim – they have a free shuttle, it runs every 15-20 minutes and it was clean and the restaurant had good food. š
Welcome back Biz, glad you had a successful, although tough at first, trip! We missed you!!! š
Missed you guys too! š
Welcome back! I love the silver lining attitude you have, such a great role model for all of us in so many ways. It is weird you come back to work in the middle of the week, but the good news only a three day work week. You will probably need the up coming weekend to recover from your vacation. I enjoyed all the photos/post from your vacation on Instagram and can’t wait for the narrative to go along with them. I have a feeling we will be hearing about a few of Charlie’s antics š
Thanks Kym! I’ve always been a half glass full kinda person š And yes, today felt like Monday all day! Nice to have just a couple more days and then the weekend off – to do laundry š
