Yesterday I felt like I was sweating balls all day. My co-worker and the husband of one of the attorneys spent four hours moving boxes in and our of our storage unit. In those four hours I drank four 16 ounce bottles of water and never felt the need to pee because I just sweat it out. Worse though was that I forgot to bring a change of clothes when I went back to work and pretty sure everyone stayed away from me because I was even offending myself!
My fuel for that job? My guilty pleasure – Sausage McMuffin with egg:
With the combination of my strength workouts on Monday and Tuesday, and moving all those boxes, well today I am just one word: SORE. I feel it in my back, shoulders, etc. I sometimes have to remind myself that I am a lot closer to 50 than 40!
I didn’t pack a lunch and by the time I got back to the office around 1:00 p.m. I was so hungry. My favorite Jimmy John’s sandwich? The Vito – no onion or tomato but extra cherry peppers please.
Long time readers will remember that Tony made me promise right before he died that I would get the roof replaced. And I did! It was such a relief this spring and summer not to cringe every time it rained. It’s solid as a rock. Well, as you would surmise, with a leaky roof comes a damaged living room ceiling. I had a contractor start work on it yesterday.
So that’s part of the living room – you can see the dry wall that’s fallen and the cracks underneath the window. So just as I was finishing up the job at the storage unit, I get a call from Jacob and he’s said “Biz, this is a much bigger project than once thought.
Yep, all that insulation? Wet. All the beams that were above the wet insulation? Totally rotten.
There was also Styrofoam insulation that my contractor said hasn’t been used in many many years – he assured me that when he was done we would notice the difference in how warm the room is. What I don’t understand and what I am trying to figure out with my roofer is why did they not notice and replace the rotted beams when they installed the roof? You can see the new wood they had to use on my roof!
Oh, and I have termites too. Lucky me! So I have an exterminator coming over this morning – luckily both Hannah and Jacob are off today – they have been such a big help to me lately! So the contractor texted me last night and said if I wanted to save money, I could remove all the blue Styrafoam insulation. Gotta love sweat equity! I had my partner in crime helping me though – Hannah! I love her demo outfit!
It took us an hour to demo it and bag it all up. I have never wanted to take a shower more in my life after we were done! I had dried sweat from moving the boxes, and just dirt and debris kept falling down with each piece of insulation we pulled down. So gross. In the back of my head though I kept wondering “would Tony approve of what I am doing?” I am just happy that it is being rectified before going into winter – I can’t imagine what would happen if we had a huge snowfall and the roof caved in!
So you can imagine I had NO desire to step one foot into the kitchen after I showered so, this happened.
This cold Fat Tire was absolute perfection. I had four squares of pizza and then boxed it up. I was so tired last night I think I fell asleep in 30 seconds.
So two things:
- Who wants to meet up at the Madison Farmers Market for walking around and lunch? It would be either Saturday, August 15 or Saturday, August 22. Just leave a comment or shoot me an email.
- I am leaving on a Jet Plane tomorrow! I am headed back to Virginia for a family reunion this weekend. I am sure the kids are more than happy that I am leaving them with the living room mess while I am gone! So I am taking another blog break and will be back next Tuesday.
Alright, time to get my shit together for the day – make it a great day and have a great weekend!
I hope you had a wonderful trip!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic of Hannah. Seriously, she is such a rock star. You must have been an absolutely wonderful mother to her growing up, you can tell that in her! She makes me want to have a daughter 🙂
Sorry to hear about your roof woes….I feel for ya. That is what my kitchen looked like. But wow….turn the air conditioner on and the room sure can stay cool now.
I have not been on the computer much…so I need to catch up on your blogs. JP had 4 teeth pulled Monday, I had cataract surgery on the right eye….so not doing a lot of reading. One eye is clear the other blury.
Have a good trip….”pack up all your cares and woes, singing low, bye, bye Black bird”
That is what the nurse sang to me over the phone while getting my medical info…. and telling me not to worry about the eye surgery.
Have a good one.
Holy cow Biz: that’s a huge project! But when it’s done you will be happy it’s done.
I have catched up on your posts but didn’t comment on them. Still on vacation and not much behind the laptop these days.
Hope you have a great weekend with your family, enjoy!
And some other fun trips to look forward to.
Yikes!!!! That will be good to get done and behind you. (btw, love the dog paws in the picture of Hannah) I would very much like to meet you at the Madison Farmer’s Market….alas, I live in a different country! 🙂 Have a great weekend Vat.
OK, I put the farmers’ market on my calendar for August 22nd since that’s when it sounds everyone can go. I’m excited! Can’t wait to hang out again. Can we do pizza for lunch? I’d love to take you to Pizza Brutta.
How early can you be here? The farmers market is best when you go early. Before 9 a.m. is pretty much required but a bit earlier would be good since it can get crowded.
Tony would approve. You will feel so relieved when this is finished. I am cringing for you. But hey! The kids are good for something. (Just kidding!) Have a great trip. And hopefully it will be finished when you get home!
OMG BIZ! That roof. I teared up with happiness when you said you got the roof replaced, and then my heart sank when I saw your living room. I’m glad it’s being fixed though! Safe travels!
Ugh on that room! It’s not surprising, though, considering you had a leaking roof. It’s such a good think you got that ceiling opened up and now it will be safe for many years to come. Not to mention it will help your utility bills.
Oh and sounds like the roofer was a little negligent. Duty, Breach, Actual Cause, Proximate Cause and damages. Yay!!
Look at you sounding like a lawyer! Love it 😀
Sorry you’re dealing with all the construction. Hopefully it will be finished by the time you get back. We’re flying into Chicago on Nov 11th and spending one night, then driving to Milwaukee for 2 days and then Green Bay for the weekend. Julie is going to see a Packer’s game, something that has been on her bucket list for ever. I booked the Hilton at Ohare, but I’m trying to figure out a better option because we need to rent a car and its 200.00 more at the airport. If I stay off airport, I can rent a car from Enterprise. I’ll deal with it after the exam. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Randi! Wow, that seems so $$$ for a car rental?!
What a huge project!!! So glad you got it done, though. Now you will have peace of mind.
Yep, that’s how I am looking at it too Lisa 😀 Good news? I’ve never had termites – it was carpenter ants and there isn’t any sign of them, so it must be old damage. I am getting all of the new wood pre-treated by Orkin though to be on the safe side 😀
Sorry to hear about all the mess! Thankfully it will be fixed right now.
I’ll be at the Farmer’s Market one of those Saturday’s. We haven’t made it down there yet this year. I also suggest climbing to the top of the Capitol Building if you haven’t already.
Nope, I’ve never climbed the Capitol Building – sounds like something fun though!
I’d meet up at the Madison farmer’s market! Its only 15 minutes from me. I wouldn’t be available on Aug 15th, but could make Aug 22nd work if that’s the date you end up choosing. Have fun on your trip.
Woop! Sounds like the 22nd works for almost everyone – pencil it in and I’ll be in touch 😀
OMG! That is a lot of work! Glad that you are getting it all done, though.
My fave Jimmy John’s is the Beach Club. Have you tried the Unwich yet? I think it’s so good that I *almost* don’t miss the bread. 😉
Carrie, my boss gives me her unwich at least two times a week and asks me to make it “pretty.” Basically what I do is mix in food I’ve brought for my lunch and chop up her unwich into a salad – she’s always like “I don’t know how you make it taste so good!” Um, well, because I add my dried cranberries, my apple, my leftover chicken. . . 😛
You will come home to a new to you room!!
Sounds like you got tons of exercise yesterday. No better way to use the extra calories than on a pizza and beer!
Well if not completely new, almost done by the time I get back – turns out he has to replace A LOT of wood 🙁
The thing I have learned from my many years of experience with roofers (no offense to any roofers) but they usually only fix the roof and not the structure supporting the roof. Of course you didn’t mention the beam rot to them ahead time so it’s not their problem. It is hard to find a truly good and thorough roofing company. I am so happy you are having everything taken care of and I know Tony is delighted. I think your mini vacation has come at the right time. Hopefully when you get home the ceiling work etc. will be completed. Have a great time. I’ll be stalking.. I mean following you on Instagram.
That’s exactly what the roofer said when I sent him the pictures, was that he repaired/replaced the roof deck and roof and he stands by his work and guarantees the roof for 30 years. I think Tony would be proud of me too – although if he would have seen me pulling down insulation and yelling “so gross!” every ten seconds, he would have been laughing his ass off!
You can stalk away on Instagram 🙂
ummm…that sounds like the worst day EVER.
That sure looks like a mess – it’ll be good to get it fixed right before the snow flies.
Have a great weekend! Of course I’m in for the Farmer’s market – I’ll help organize any way I can 🙂
Oh my gosh! What a project (both the boxes and the insulation!)- you must have been exhausted last night! Pizza=deserved! Rock star
