Well, the good news is that my chest x-ray came back normal, so no lung cancer (ha!), or pneumonia. He described what I have as “bronchial spasms” and the best course of action is . . . more prednisone. I also have a stronger cough medicine and he wants me to use the inhaler 5x a day vs. 3x a day.
He said the only exercise i can do is walk, but if the coughing continues to obviously stop. So at this point it’s a 50/50 chance of me doing the 5k on Saturday – only the next couple days will tell! Regardless, he said that I probably won’t feel 100% for another 12-14 days.
But, I can’t complain one bit. So you know that my Dad had cancer, my husband had cancer and my brother had cancer. Well, my cousin Pam has cancer. Pam lives in Virginia and is married with two adult kids. She was my first female role model, but as I write this, I am not sure I ever told her that.
I remember she and her boyfriend (who ended up being her husband!) spent the night at our house one night because they were backpacking across the country – I was probably 11 or 12 at the time and I just thought that was the coolest thing. I was an avid letter writer as a child, and no matter how many times I wrote her, she always wrote me back – sometimes just a simple post card from where ever they were at – it meant so much to me at the time!
Well, she was a breast cancer survivor, but several years later they found out that the cancer had spread to her bones. She now travels 600 miles round trip to Boston every month for clinical trial treatments. Yesterday she wrote an article on the Huffington Post website – you can check it out here. So while I am knocked to the sidelines for a couple weeks, she’s fighting for her life – I love you Pam!
Breakfast yesterday? Sucked ass. I mean really big time sucked ass. Way too many sweet flavors going on in this parfait – you would have thought I had learned my lesson! Vanilla chocolate chunk Chobani yogurt, sliced banana and vanilla cherry granola. Barf. I only ate about 6 bites before setting it aside, and then I had to literally take it to my office kitchen to throw it out because of the smell.
This came in at 329 calories, 4 fat, 62 carbs, 4.8 fiber and 11.5 protein. But ick.
I didn’t bring a lunch because my appointment was at 1:00 p.m. By the time I got out of the doctor office, down stairs for the chest x-ray and then went to Walgreen’s for my prescriptions, I was hangry! I stopped at McDonald’s – dollar menu all the way baby! The grilled chicken chipotle bbq snacker and a small fry: 480 calories, 19 fat, 56 carbs, 4 fiber and 19 protein.
The snack wrap was actually quite tasty – the bbq sauce had a spicy kick to it.
With the extra time I had yesterday afternoon after I got home, I put together Carol’s salsa that I canned over the weekend – she won the August challenge giveaway. Then I also FINALLY boxed up my food magazines for Marcia – I only promised them to her six weeks ago!
Dinner was breaded chicken over mashed potatoes with a pan sauce and broccoli. I don’t really have a recipe for the chicken, although that piece below is half of one half of a chicken breast – they were huge chicken boobs!
Dredge the pounded chicken in egg whites (I season with salt/pepper/Italian seasoning), then dip into Italian style bread crumbs. I pan fried them in 2 teaspoons of grapeseed oil – I forgot I had a bottle of this and I like it because it has a higher smoking point and doesn’t burn.
Once the chicken was cooked on both sides, I removed the chicken. Here is a simple pan sauce recipe:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon olive oil/grapeseed oil
- squeeze of fresh lemon juice (about 1 teaspoon)
- salt and pepper to taste.
With the residual oil left in the pan (about 1 teaspoon) add the butter and melt it. The add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly stir in the chicken broth for a nice creamy sauce, should take about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper and add the lemon juice. Makes 4, 1/4 cup servings: 44 calories, 4.7 fat, 1.6 carbs, 0 fiber and .44 protein.
This delicious dinner was 531 calories, 31 fat, 45 carbs, 5.5 fiber and 21 protein.
Was anyone else a football widow last night? I don’t mind because Tony LOVES the game so much, even though we both picked the Giants to win. So while he watched football I watched Brittany & Abby, International House Hunters, Restaurant Impossible AND I watched music videos. I haven’t done that in a long time. I saw this great video and I have never heard of this band before.
Please don’t tell me they are country music stars, because I really don’t like country music! Check out this video:
Am I the only one who’s never heard of this band before?
Alright – off to get my shit together – make it a great day!
I’m glad your test came back okay. Hopefully, you won’t have to keep taking medicine a lot longer.
Happy to hear your chest is normal, mine hasn’t been the same since that second kid ;). I know you are bummed about the 5 K, but maybe you can still walk it. Hope the cough is calming down and you are on the mend sooner than predicted. On BERFING watch tonight, better than the Real Housewives.
Ha – love it – BERF is here!
Your cousin is an extremely strong lady. I think your family comes by the fighting gene naturally. 🙂 I hope her treatments continue to improve her quality and quanity of life.
I hope you get up and at them soon. Sorry about the 5k. Sometimes I think our bodies tell us we need some down time.
My mouth was watering at the chicken meal. It looks like a creation to be served in an overpriced place.
Whoa this nagging cough is a pain in the butt. Hope you get better soon from it. How is Hannah doing in school, is she settling into her classes nicely? Mine are all in now and I get a bit of a break in the day when they are gone. But still so much to do around here. I think my house can be on hoarders;-)
Hey Robin!! I meant to comment on Facebook – I thought it was hilarious that your oldest son wouldn’t crack a smile!
Hannah is doing great – settling into school, loves her teachers and has met some new friends. If we lived closer I’d send Hannah over to help clean, but she’s ruthless!
I’m so glad your chest is normal. Cancer is awful. Good news about Tony and Charlie. Best wishes to Pam.
I’ve been reading your blog for about a year and a half. I love your fresh, honest approach to life. I found you through Charlie’s blog.
So great that your xray was clear! Hope your cough goes away soon. I’m sorry about Pam. I’m a breast cancer survivor too but I’m super-lucky that mine never came back (it’s been 14 years). Sounds like she’s a fighter though, go get ’em Pam!!
Good news about your chest and lots of thoughts for your friend, Pam. My husband is the football widower in this house, he doesn’t like it at all, much prefers baseball. I am all about the Steelers, so I am excited for Sunday night.
Yippee! Go Steelers!
Cancer sucks so much.
I hope this plethora of meds will fix you up! You must be exhausted with this lasting so long.
Football? Honestly, it affects me in person because of living in a college town – home game weekends mean a gazillion people come here and crowd the restaurants and streets! Needless to say, I stay home.
Very glad your x-ray turned out okay! Best wishes to Pam as well.
I am not a football widow. In fact, I am more into the football than my hubby. We love to watch games together and bet each week on the games – the loser buys the winner dinner at their choice of restaurants 😀
I have to ask – did you win? I know John already picked out a place to eat if he won!
So glad you are cancer free and pneumonia free. I’ve had pneumonia three times (lived in North Dakota, yo) and it is miserable. I am so sorry about your friend. I will be keeping you both in my thoughts.
Glad your chest is normal!! 🙂
Best of luck to Pam, she most certainly is a fighter. It’s so hard to see our loved ones go through such tough times.
Hope you can walk your 5K, if you can’t, there will be another!
Cancer sucks – fight on Pam! Hope the coughing gets better soon & you are able to do your 5K on Saturday.
Never heard of the band, but really like that song! Wiki doesn’t specify the genre of band, but it does say they’re from Tennessee, home of country music. If you like it, who cares?
I agree – I don’t care if they are a country band, I just loved the message in the song. 😀
I read Pam’s story as well. I’m just so in awe of some people. You clearly come from a family of fighters Biz, yourself included. I hope you start feeling well soon.
What a beautiful song. I had never heard it.
Are you able to actually watch the siamese twin show? I can’t do it Biz. I just can’t!
I can actually watch the Brittany and Abby show – I’ve been following them since their first documentary when they were 6. Being a twin I find it facinating how well they can get along, not only physically but mentally. And like most twins they have different personalities, one is adventerous, one is not – but in the end they have to meet half way.
I’ve always told Tony that if they had a reality show that had conjoined twins, who owned a food truck, but were secretly hoarders, I’d totally watch that show!
I hope this time takes care of that cough for good! Pam – just amazing what a trooper! That chicken dinner looks great Biz. Never heard of that band. Also, thanks for letting me know how to make the iced cafe mochas, I bought the stuff yesterday…woot!
Hooray for skinny iced coffees! 😀
I hate cancer.
Glad that you don’t have pneumonia, but that sucks about more prednisone. And now I want french fries. Thanks a lot 😉
Ha – you’re welcome! (they were right out of the fryer and so hot and crispy!)
Cancer sucks. It just does.
Oh my. I had bronchial spasms the last time I had bronchitis a few years ago and it was awful. I remember my abs were sore all the time from the coughing. Are you allowed to walk your 5K? If so, I say do it! You won’t regret that you did and I’d bet if you take a big hit off your inhaler prior you’ll do just fine. Walking is actually terrific fat burning exercise, even though it doesn’t always feel like it.
I’m not a football widow because I love football. I was just sad that when I went to bed the Giants were ahead and I got up to their loss this morning.
Yeah, I can walk so I think I am going to do it! I am 90% there mentally! It was a late game for you – the kick off wasn’t until almost 7:45 central time last night!
That chicken looks so good!!
I’m so glad the coughing diagnosis wasn’t bad.
Pam is definitely a fighter. I’m keeping her in my prayers
Man, that dinner looks terrific!
I wish Pam the best and hope you start feeling better soon!
I am looking forward to the magazines. It’s probably a bad time to tell you that I’m going back to work on Monday. 🙂
I’ll be half time for 5 weeks though, so still time to peruse magazines in the afternoons for awhile.
I know – so sorry I didn’t get those magazines to you sooner, but hopefully with half days you’ll have time!
Definitely glad your doctor’s visit was a good one – aka – nothing too serious. If you can’t make your 5k this weekend don’t push yourself – there always seems to be a 5k going on at some point – you’ll want to run it feeling 100%, not 60%.
Amazing story about Pam. I’m so glad this trial is stabilizing her cancer. I pray she tackles everything on her list. She sounds like she very adventurous & has amazing spirit!
SO glad its nothing serious! Take it easy! Pam- what an amazing story. I hope she gets through this as fast as possible. Love that you still managed to cook a fabulous dinner despite a crazy busy day
