Today is Hannah’s first day at her new University. She could not be more excited. Her books were ordered weeks ago, her school supplies at the ready. I am so happy that she’ll be at a school where kids actually like to learn.
Community college is kind of like what we called it when I was younger – high school with cigarettes. Most of the students Hannah went to school with went there because they didn’t have a choice. We opted for her to go to community college as a cost effective way to get her general education credits out of the way.
I am sad because I usually take a first day of school picture, and this is the first year I won’t be able to do that, so I re-post her first school picture in kindergarten. She was growing out her bangs and I had her hair pulled back – it looked really cute. The photographer however, gave each kid a comb, and even though she thought she didn’t need to use it, felt obligated since he gave it to her. So we got a nice picture of how long her bangs were!
I was a horrible student. I didn’t particularly like long projects, like my junior theme. I don’t even remember the topic, but my Dad loved the topic so much he actually wrote a theme. He asked me to read it and I loved it so much I turned it in as my own – he got a B+!
The only time I did good in school was when I was on a sports team – you had to maintain a B average and not miss any classes or get any detentions, otherwise you didn’t get to play.
Spring of my junior year I was a bit “lax” about going to certain classes. Turns out my boyfriend had lunch 4th period when I had Spanish, so it was hit or miss if I would go to that class. He had study halls the last two periods, so computers and English were hit or miss too if I went.
A letter got sent home saying I was failing some classes. My Dad scheduled a meeting with all my teachers and Dean. At 7:30 in the morning, my Dad told all my teachers and Dean that he thought I wasn’t being challenged enough – basically he thought I was too smart and just bored.
I’ll never forget it when the Spanish teacher stood up and said “If your daughter showed up to class once in a while, maybe we could teach her something she doesn’t already know.”
My Dad’s face fell. For the rest of the semester (this was February!) I had to sign in and out of each class, each teacher had to sign off that I did my homework/projects, etc. I ended up on the honor roll by the end of that semester.
I found that I had a Jimmy Dean breakfast bowl in the deep freeze – who even knows how long its been in there, but it was delicious – especially topped with my grilled cherry salsa and a sliced apple. Breakfast comes in at 312 calories, 8 fat, 38 carbs, 5.3 fiber and 22 protein.
I ran to the grocery store at lunch – its grilling Friday at my office. I am making chili hot dogs, apple coleslaw, and I made small peanut butter cookies to make mini ice cream sandwiches. I had planned on having a taco salad for lunch, but when I went to my veggie drawer in our basement fridge, almost all of it was frozen. So when I was at the store, I got about $3 of greens and veggies for my taco meat.
I didn’t realize until after I downloaded my picture, that you really can’t see the goodness in this salad – mixed baby greens, carrots, tri colored peppers, some cheddar cheese, cucumbers. My salad dressing was 1/4 cup of my salsa mixed with 1 tablespoon of ranch dressing – so delicious and filling – 411 calories, 26 fat, 4 carbs, 2.2 fiber and 37 protein.
For some reason, I failed to look at the weather forecast this week. These cool mornings lately have already switched my brain to fall weather and comfort food. When I left the office, it was 93 degrees! I made beef stew in the crock pot. The only thing I did differently was that I tossed the beef chunks in 1/4 cup of flour, 1 tablespoon powdered mustard and 1 teaspoon of paprika. I brown the beef and then tossed everything in the crock.
Tony wrapped up some garlic in foil and put that in the beef juice to cook. He made some amazeballs garlic bread – perfect for soaking up all the gravy. Dinner comes in at 468 calories, 19 fat, 48 carbs, 6 fiber and 23 protein.
Tony joked and asked if we were going to have split pea soup for dinner tonight since it will be in the 90’s again today. I am secretly hoping for some sort of Party Pizza Friday!
And ever since I saw that Rhonda found this popcorn, I’ve been dying to have some. Although we call it the Chicago Mix – half cheddar popcorn and half caramel corn. A restaurant near my office actually sells it so I swung by on my way home. I may have had a couple handfuls while watching t.v. last night – so good!
Alright – have to get my shit together for all the food I am bringing for my work lunch. Question of the Day: Were you a good student? Make it a great day!
I know exactly how you feel Momma Bizzy. Now that I have “wheels” it is all I can do NOT to drive down to JMU to take Squirrel a brown bag lunch for her first day of junior year tomorrow. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Wait. I just might could do that, couldn’t I? giggle
Hannah is going to do just great! No doubt – I mean LOOK at who she has for parents. The apple didn’t fall far. Success is on the horizon. Give her our best and a biggggggggg hug from Skip.
I remember my first day of school I was so scared. Everything worked out ok through. I remember that my mom gave me a extra tasty lunch. I think this was to help me ease into being in school. Going from pre school to real school is a big shock for any kid.
Now I am craving that popcorn all over again and it is 9am here 🙂 Thanks for the link up.
I was a good student, only because I really had no other choice…there was no skipping classes at my school and the idea of my Dad finding out I was not behaving scared the crap out of me 🙂 Tom is one of the smartest people I have ever met, but he dropped out and got a GED. School just doesn’t work for some people.
Cute picture of Miss Hannah! Hope she has a fantastic year. I was a good student. Never skipped a class. Maybe it was because I didn’t have a boyfriend in HS 🙂
That popcorn looks amazing. For now it’s a good I live 1500 miles from Chicago, but secretly hoping that DH goes to another conference there. Then I’ll have to splurge!
Garrett’s Popcorn–the Chicago mix specifically–is the most addictive thing I’ve ever tasted! So insanely good. I don’t know how they do it . . . I probably don’t want to know! lol.
Yeah–I was a pretty good student. As I got older, I got even better. Maybe when you’re the one paying for it, it’s more important. ha ha. 🙂
Michelle – I agree – whenever I go to Chicago I hit up the Garrett’s at the train station, I don’t care if my fingers are stained that cheddar yellow for days – totally worth it!
Hope its awesome Hannah!!! Drool to that popcorn. My Mom used to send me popcorn factory when I was in college…that makes me CRAVE it! I was a very good student 🙂
I was a great student until my senior year, then I got rebellious and dropped out without my parents even knowing. I just stopped going. I had to take night classes to graduate but I got her done. I never get tired of Hannah’s kindergarten pic and the story of her feeling obligated to use the comb is adorable!
Wow, that’s ballzy V – dropping out and not even telling your parents! Glad you got your GED though. 😀
Congrats to Hannah! And now I am hungry…all I had was a boring ass ham and cheese for lunch 🙂 Not having a fully stocked kitchen and all the unpacking and cleaning has been good for the waistline however….I’ve lost 5 lbs!
Hooray on the -5 pounds – that’s awesome Kim!
I can’t believe you were such a bad girl! I was way too good to skip classes (except for senior cut day when everyone did it). Your work colleagues are so lucky to have you!
How exciting for Hannah to start the next part of her college adventure – she’s going to do great!
Love the picture of Hannah, so cute. Time sure does fly doesn’t it? I was a poor student. When I wanted to do good I did but, I choose to play around. In college I did excellent because I knew my grants wouldn’t pay for failure! That stew and garlic bread looks killer. Have a great weekend Biz!!
I saw this the other day and thought of you: http://shop.theoatmeal.com/products/sriracha-popcorn
I was a pretty good student in high school. (I had no choice really. My parents are Asian after all!) I got to relax a bit in college and then dropped out. No college degree for this girl!
Happy first day of school, Hannah!
What??!! Sriracha popcorn? That could be dangerous – thanks Jenn! 😀
Good luck to Hannah! I’m sure she’ll do great! 🙂
Thanks Julianne! 😀
Oh that beef stew sounds so good! I haven’t made soup in ages.
I was a decent student but lazy and loved to daydream. I’d zone out for class but still manage to get decent grades.
Step away from the popcorn! Now you know that is not “calorie” friendly and what happenned to the NO Snacking Rule?
On a lighter note, have you tried the Angie’s Lite Kettle Corn? I buy it at Costco. Here is the link: http://shop.angieskettlecorn.com/Angies-Lite-Kettle-Corn/p/AKC-000697&c=AngiesKettleCorn@KettleCorn.
As you would say, it is amaze balls!! I have had the lite kettle corn and the white cheddar.
Have a good weekend!
My daughter started her final year of HS last Tuesday but I managed to get her picture next to her car for the lst day photo. She didn’t even fight me on that. I LOVE that popcorn mix and get it anytime we’re in Chicago. So dangerous (and I didn’t even think I’d like it at first).
Thanks for the link Carol! It was just two handfuls and then put away – so good! 😀
Love the 1st day of school pic. Funny, my husband requested chili dogs for dinner tonight. I have to run 14 miles in the morning, told him he is on his own. 🙂 Have a great weekend.
I was a good student…except in math. I tried really hard, but I just never could get it. LOL at the Spanish teacher’s remark! Whoops!
Don’t know why I show up as “coarol”.
B
All the best to Hannah for a successful college experience!
Best,
Bonnie
