Thanks for all the ideas on how to get tar off yesterday – so glad I have alternatives next time that happens and I’ll walk away from the cleaning products to clean myself!
I decided to make an English muffin sammie with one of my homemade sausages.
On the side was some of the best watermelon I’ve had all year – breakfast comes in at 488 calories, 20 fat, 29 carbs, 2 fiber and 45 protein.
I had this dry nagging cough yesterday so I didn’t work out. I haven’t coughed yet today, so hopefully that’s a good sign.
This is how I grocery shop: I read my grocery store sale flyer, see what meat is on sale and base my weekly menu on that. They had pork stew for $1.99 and I was like “I wonder what I can make with that?”
A quick Google search, and wouldn’t you know it, the third link to show up is one of my own – a recipe for a Thai pork stew that I had completely forgotten I’d made! The only thing I did differently was after the stew finished cooking, I cut up two zucchini’s and added them to the hot stew while it cooled down. When I reheated this for lunch, the zucchini were still crisp tender.
This couldn’t be easier – just throw all the ingredients in a dutch oven (or any pot that is oven safe with a lid) and stir every 30 minutes.
While it may not look like much, this is a winning dish – the flavors are super complex, its slightly spicy with the sriracha, and the pork stew met is super tender. I shared this with a couple people at work who both declared it delicious!
With 3/4 cup cooked rice on the bottom, lunch comes in at 444 calories, 10 fat, 56 carbs, 4.3 fiber and 27 protein.
I am loving these cool temps we’ve been having! Right now its sunny and 57 degrees – love! Cooler weather always makes me think of chili. I’ve made lots of chili in my time, but I always look for new ones. I am actually looking forward to Nicole’s Chili Cook-off she has every year for football season. I think a white chicken chili is about the only one I haven’t tried.
One chili I know Tony loves? Cincinnati chili because it has no beans. I found another recipe for Cincinnati chili, but I altered it enough that it’s now my own. And I don’t put shitty onions in mine, thank you very much.
Cincinnati Chili
– 1 cup serving: 300 calories, 23 fat, 2 carbs, 2 fiber and 20 protein
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef (I used 85/15)
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
- 1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
In a large pot, saute the beef, garlic, and chili powder together until the beef starts to brown. If you beef is really fatty, you can drain some of the fat. I didn’t need to.
Throw everything else in the pool and simmer for 45-60 minutes. This is a loose chili, meant to be served chili mac style over cooked spaghetti.
And for Tony, it isn’t chili mac unless you have oyster crackers!
I had chili mac three ways: I added kidney beans to mine, cheddar cheese and a few oyster crackers.
I ate every single bite – the only thing I did to mine was add some Tabasco to it. Dinner comes in at 574 calories, 29 fat, 43 carbs, 6.7 fiber and 32 protein.
Okay – two things are already bothering me. Yesterday I went to Walgreen’s to get some cough drops, they already have the Halloween candy displayed! And at work yesterday, I got not one, but two catalogs for Christmas cards! Why can’t we still enjoy summer – it seems like the world is rushing us to Halloween and Christmas already!
I love getting mail! Yesterday I got this cookbook that the publishers want me to review – can’t wait to check out some of the recipes.
Stats for Monday:
- 1506 caloires, 60 fat, 129 carbs, 13 fiber and 106 protein
- 34% calories from carbs, 36% fat and 30% protein
- no exercise
Since I didn’t win the lottery, guess I have to get my ass in gear and get to work. Make it a great day!
That soup looks awesome. I need to meal plan more around my flyers, definitely a good idea. I can’t even imagine halloween with the weather we have been having.
I love that you googled your own recipe! Chili is great over spaghetti and your pictures are making me hungry.
What a great cookbook title! I’m sure you’ll find some winning recipes in there, like your Thai pork stew ….which looks amazing. I love anything Thai. I think it’s my favorite ethnic food.
Chili contest has some great-looking entries this year! Thanks for the shoutout! And I, too, love Cinci chili! A break from bean-packed chili is sometimes nice 🙂
I do exactly what you do for my recipes. I changed my plan this week because when I went to the store sausage was $1.oo off more for a manager special. BONUS! I love when you google you find your own recipe!
I am impressed you type 120 wpm! I’m lucky to get 50.
As much as I want the cooler weather Halloween and Christmas bring, I say back off retailers and let us enjoy our Holidays as they come naturally.
I wanted to say thank you for silently pressuring me into getting a panini grill. I always long for the yummy “melty” goodness you make. I didn’t get lucky enough to score mine at a yard sale.
chili and soups are the first things i want to make when it gets cool too. it’s getting cooler here, but i’ll be happy when we’re in the lower 70’s. i LOVE the look of that chili on the noodles, YUM! and i have noticed halloween stuff, but christmas? i already have to think about that? let’s enjoy labor day first 🙂
That stew looks awesome! So funny you found yourself on Google that way. I’m going to have to try to make that one seeing as it’s easy and delicious!
I do my grocery shopping the same way.
UGH. While i love Halloween and Christmas, it’s freaking August!!!!
I love that you got your own recipe on a google search! That’s awesome!
I have yet to buy a decent watermelon yet this summer…I’ve picked some really bad ones lately Ugh!
My friend from a lifetime ago (went to college together in Hawaii) found me through a google search for white chocolate caramel corn. We’ve kept in touch ever since 🙂
I’ve never googled my own recipe but, I see my homemade A.1. sauce being pinned on Pinterest quite often. I just made chili and it will be on Friday’s blog, funny John doesn’t like beans either…I added very little but, he still picks each one out! I have to go to the grocery store after work, I’ll see if Halloween candy is out…geesh, nothing like rushing it. Hope your cough is gone for good!
I loved up to you will obtain carierd out proper here. The cartoon is attractive, your authored subject matter stylish. nevertheless, you command get bought an nervousness over that you want be delivering the following. ill for sure come further beforehand once more since exactly the same nearly very incessantly inside case you defend this increase.
Halloween candy is already on display? crazy!!
Christmas cards???? STOP the insanity!!!!!!!
Never a recipe, but I’ve googled my own pictures before!
I feel like everyone wants us to rush through life. Onto the next big thing. I’m still trying to enjoy summer!! 🙂
And they skip right over Thanksgiving.
You put this post together before work? You’re my hero.
Here is my secret on my blogging schedule:
http://mybizzykitchen.com/2011/04/15/1-faq-and-flashback-friday/
I write all my blogs for the weeks ahead of time – usually type out the recipe, etc. on Sunday mornings. Then I just have to fill in the blanks of what actually happened, and I upload my photos at night after work – takes 10 minutes. Then my blogging in the morning is usually done in about 20 minutes. I type like 120 words a minute, so that helps! 😀
hooray for free cookbooks to review. Love when that happens!
I was in Hobby Lobby last month, I think it was around the middle, and they are FULL of Christmas crap! Holy Cow. I thought, geez, NOT even August yet! I mean I know crafters have to do their thing, but Xmas shit out for 6 months is going a little overboard. I went in there looking for citronella bucket candles….NOT ONE TO BE FOUND. lol in July….imagine that! Guess you gotta grab the summer stuff at the end of winter.
I just googled my hippie granola and Jill’s blog (Sassy Pear) came up with it, LOL!
I hate how retailers push the season. It’s August!!! We call that summer. Pretty sure that if I bought Halloween candy now, I’d either eat it or it would be all melted before Halloween.
Not kidding – my brother used to ration his Halloween candy so that he would eat the last piece of candy the day before the next Halloween – used to drive me and my sister nuts! 😀
I google my own recipes all the time! Lol. Yesterday was the first day that felt like fall to me, after a long stretch of all hot days. I do love fall but I agree – it is NOT time for Halloween candy yet! And definitely not Xmas cards.
I haven’t googled one but I have gone to my own blog and looked it up on the recipe tab!
Why do I think you were not going to eat carbohydrates from grains/potatoes/rice/pasta except in the morning or after a hard workout? Only asking because I see you had pasta for dinner.
You are so astute Helen – yep, I did say that – and even had a spaghetti squash as my base but when I cooked the pasta it was all over. 😀
hahaha- that is AWESOME that you googled your own recipe. I actually have done that too 🙂 WHY do retailers push so hard …..it makes me sad to see fall/winter stuff too early (although I will always take pumpkin flavored items).
My mom grocery shops the same way as you do, I would except I shop at the commissary on base and they don’t do a weekly flyer or anything like that.
Ray’s favorite is Cincinnati chili as well, and for the same reason that Tony likes it…no beans! I prefer just regular old chili, but white chicken chili is yummy too!
Seriously, Christmas cards!? I did see quite a few Halloween displays up alreadys :/ Hope your cough stays away, and you have a great day!
