Spicy Avocado Chocolate Truffles
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. This month I am partnering with the Haas Avocado Board – Love One Today, to show how you can incorporate heart healthy avocados into a sweet treat like these Spicy Avocado Chocolate Truffles.
When I told my son-in-law Jacob that I was adding chipotle peppers to these truffles, he nearly threw up in his mouth. But I wanted to balance the bitterness of the cocoa powder, the sweetness of the chocolate, and the creaminess of the avocado—and it turned out to be the perfect sweet treat in one bite.
What is a truffle?
A truffle is a small, rich dessert typically made from a ganache—a smooth mixture of chocolate and cream—that is rolled into a ball. Often coated in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, finely chopped nuts, or other toppings, truffles have a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture. The chocolate ganache can be flavored with liqueurs, extracts like vanilla or mint, or other ingredients for variety. My version is weight watcher friendly as well! You really only need one to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Roman totally wanted a bite, but dogs can’t have chocolate. Seriously this is the easiest dessert to make. I just store them uncovered in the fridge.
What other variations are there other than spicy avocado chocolate truffles?
In addition to classic chocolate, there are many creative variations to try. Fruit truffles blend ingredients like dried fruits (such as apricots or dates) with nuts, oats, or coconut for a healthier, naturally sweet option. White chocolate truffles offer a creamy, delicate flavor, often infused with citrus zest or berry purées. Peanut butter truffles combine the rich, salty flavor of peanut butter with chocolate or coconut coatings, making for a decadent twist. For a unique, indulgent treat, salted caramel truffles feature a gooey caramel center wrapped in dark or milk chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt.
Can you make this vegan?
Vegan truffles made from coconut cream and dark chocolate cater to plant-based diets, while spiced versions have cinnamon, nutmeg, or chili powder add warmth and complexity to the traditional recipe. These variations allow endless customization based on personal taste or dietary needs.
