One thing I realized when I was flying home this last trip was that I no longer got butterflies in my stomach. I got butterflies every time I was coming home to see Tony. It didn’t matter if I had been at work all day or away on a trip without him for several days. This time I was just. . . coming home. I can’t believe that on Sunday Tony will have been gone nine months already. It seems so long ago and like yesterday, all at the same time.
I am leaving town again! This time just for the weekend. My cousin on my Dad’s side of the family has a son who is having a graduation party. Her Dad, my Uncle, died when I was a freshman in high school, and my Dad died 18 years ago and somehow with those brothers gone, we never really kept in touch all that much, other than by Christmas cards. I am really excited to see all my cousins and my Aunt. We will be driving to Michigan for the weekend – a quick turn around too because it’s a 7 hour drive! Pretty sure Hannah will be doing most of the driving – that girl loves to drive.
Yesterday’s breakfast was what I call an inside out omelet. I scrambled egg whites and baby spinach and tucked it into a slice of honey ham, then sprinkled with Cabot cheese extra light sharp cheddar and stuck it under the broiler. So delish!
Usually around 11:30 I’ll check not only my blood sugar, but also how many steps I have so far for the day. My blood sugar was 232 – perfect for walking. I reached down to look at my Fit Bit. It was gone. I looked all around my desk and office. I thought maybe it fell out at home, or in my driveway? I was so bummed because that’s the last gift Tony ever gave me. The plastic that holds it in is torn and I need to replace it – but the cheap me is like $15 for a replacement? I guess it’s better to fork over that than to pay $50 for a new one. So I went to my car to get my walking shoes, and there it was – right outside my car door! So it didn’t capture my steps for a few hours, so it was probably closer to 13k. It was really warm yesterday – maybe 86 when I walked, but I got my 3 miles in.
Earlier in the morning my brother Charlie sent me a funny text – I love him.
So lunch was a bit of a mystery! I threw a bag of frozen soup in my bag and a can of green beans. When I lost 70 pounds back in 1999, I added a can of green beans to almost every meal – a whole can is like 70 calories and it bulks up your meal and keeps you fuller longer. I ended up adding 1/2 a can of green beans to my soup – which my guess was tortilla soup.
I will be so sad when cherry season is over because I won’t have my grilled cherry salsa anymore. But I have a BIG giveaway tomorrow, so you’ll have to come back tomorrow and check it out.
Since there was salsa, it was only fair to make taquitos for dinner. I did ground beef and cheese.
So here is the continuing saga of my contractor. First off, I had another contractor come in, and Jacob and I both felt that he completely understood the project. And he basically said everything the first contractor did was wrong. Not the right wood, not the right insulation, the supports he built weren’t correct because they didn’t properly distribute the weight, etc. I have another contractor who is a preferred contractor with Home Depot coming today and we’ll make a decision between the two this weekend.
Meanwhile the first contractor was supposed to come last night with his receipts. And he was a no show. But he doesn’t understand what I am capable of doing. This is just a sampling of texts I plan on sending him in the coming days. He has a four year old daughter so I’ll text him “is this the example you want to set for your daughter of being a cheat?” Oh, and then there is social media. If he still doesn’t respond after a week, I am putting his business card on Facebook every day telling everyone in McHenry county to stay as far away from him as possible. My being nice is so over and you have to look out when I get mad.
Game on!
So I know I don’t normally post on Saturday’s but you’ll want to check it out – BIG giveaway! Here’s a hint! Follow me on Instagram over the weekend – My Bizzy Kitchen – have a great weekend!
thank you for sharing
Biz, what color case do you want? They’re cheap on eBay I’ll have one shipped to you 🙂 (also they have a watch version if you want that)
You are so nice! I have the fit bit zip – any color works! ???
WHAT A JERK! I’m glad you’re sticking up to him though. you should definitely use social media – I’d leave a terrible yelp review if he has one and if not broadcast it on facebook and maybe even hang fliers in the local grocery stores etc. <- butttt then again, I take my grudges super seriously!
Just contact the Fitbit Customer support. My case was broken and they send me a new one for free from the US to the Netherlands.
So so so many hugs about the butterflies.
log post
great post
that has remained in my brain.
Prayers to you on Sunday. Tony is looking down on you and proud that he is in your thoughts everyday, loving him and missing him ,but that you are moving forward.
Oh, that screenshot of your contractor texts makes my blood boil!!!!!
Woosahhhh….
Have a great time on your weekend trip! The “up and back” reminds me of when we’d go to my grandparents’ house in Minnesota – drive up Friday afternoon and drive home Sunday after church – 8 hours depending on stops! Pretty sure that’s where I learned to love road-tripping!
Unfortunately, your contractor story is pretty common and typical. I swear, I am so tempted to start a woman-owned contractor business to show them how it is done. Don’t be surprised if the Home Depot bid comes in at twice that of the other contractor. When I did a flip that needed a new roof, they wanted to charge double what 4 other roofers were going to charge.
You are such the traveling woman now!
Thanks for the heads up Lori – I appreciate it! And yes, you would get lots of work if you were a contractor!
I know, it’s crazy how much I’ve traveled this year – and next week to Denver and then I think I am out of vacation days for the rest of the year! 😛
You would have a hard time convincing me you are not a nice person. You are the definition of nice. I think your photo is even next to the word in the dictionary. It also says: see motivator, loyal, time management pro, chef, and all around amazing person. I know what you mean though and I am happy the gloves are off. One of our local news stations has a segment called 12 on your side. If you get scammed or anything like that you contact them and they will make it a news story and give the person a chance to make it right. Maybe you have something like that in your area.
Yes, please send Charlie extra Chex mix. He is an awesome brother!
I forgot about your cherry salsa… I have never made that. Now I am panicking since cherry season is close to an end. I will have to find your recipe and try it this weekend.
I’m happy you will be blogging tomorrow. Can’t wait to see what you are up to.
You are so sweet Kym! I am reposted the cherry salsa recipe tomorrow for my giveaway, but here is the link – pretty much any fruit that grills well would work – peaches, pineapple 😀

That contractor nonsense is so crazy!!! My mom had to fire hers too! She also paid upfront part of the costs, and he only showed up a few times – apparently drunk and the only work he did was awful! It was laying/fixing concrete in the garage and driveway. The only small “square” he did wasn’t even a square, none of the lines were straight. He left his tools and my mom was going to give them back, but he never showed up to get them when he said he would. I said sell them!! Anyways, we feel your pain and hope the next one is a million times better!!
Like your Mom, probably the first big thing she did after your Dad died – sucks that people take advantage of people like that, isn’t it?!
We are happy with the second guy who came last night – who would bring two other workers and finish the job in 4 days 😀
Your brother is so awesome. He’s the greatest human ever. Remember that next Christmas and send him extra Chex Mix. No one on earth deserves it more.
You are also my favorite brother!
Does the contractor not realize you’re a legal secretary too?
Btw, Fitbit guarantee’s the case and all parts. I lost my first fitbit and they replaced it with no problem. I didnt even have to send them a receipt.
Not yet Randi, but he will soon! 😀
You can get bracelets for fitbits from Amazon – $7 for 10 (different colors). The reviews were sketchy but I have had no problems with them.
That’s awesome Phyllis – I’ll definitely check that out!
I hope you have an awesome trip! You stick to your guns regarding that contractor. Makes me so frustrated when someone doesn’t hold up their end of the deal. Kudos for putting him on blast!
Thanks! And yes, this contractor has no idea what shit storm is about to happen to him – my gloves are off! 😀
