Friday night when I was working at the restaurant, towards the last hour or so, my big toe on my left foot just started throbbing. Like someone was poking a knife into it. I just chalked it up to that my feet were just hurting, and I came home, put my feet up for about 45 minutes and then we went to bed. Saturday I woke up and something was wrong. My big toe was all swollen and just gross looking. I don’t need to give you any more details, because chances are, you are eating a meal as you read this!
We thought it might be an ingrown toe nail, so Tony had me soak my feet in epsom salt for an hour. Yep, a good hour. When I took my foot out of the water, it looed even worse! But he picked at it (what a wonderful husband who doesn’t mind digging into my toe!) and while it hurt like a MF, he pulled part of a nail out and it was enough to release the pressure. I was wondering how I was possibly going to be on my feet for seven hours that night in the bar. I just wrapped it up really well and hoped for the best.
We went to Tony’s friends funeral. It was open casket, both of which we weren’t expecting, and I don’t know why. Bob was called “Biker Bob” and as we pulled into the funeral home, we knew we were in the right place because there were dozens of different motorcycles outside from Harley’s, to custom bikes and choppers. Bob was 59, and he was divorced with two older children, then got hooked up with a young girl probably half his age and they had a son who is now 8 years old. They had videos running in the room of different photos of him, and his young son was running around with other kids pointing to the video and saying “that’s my Dad” while he Dad lied in a casket not 10 feet away from him. I wonder if you can actually grasp the concept of your parent dying at the age of 8?
We stayed about an hour, Tony saw some friends he hadn’t seen in years. I had to head to work, but we had time to stop and grab something to eat. We had taken separate cars, so I was just following him. As soon as I saw the direction he was taken I was happy – Yu’s Mandarin! The other day I posted a picture of Tony smoking a cigar, and his son made a comment “Slim Thug.” Tony wanted me to take this picture to send to Joe and his wife. He’s probably lost 20 pounds in the last six weeks. He eats healthier than me! You know, because I love my cheese!
Tony ended up getting a cup of wonton soup and potstickers for his lunch. Me? I went with the spicy Taiwan Beef Noodle Soup.
OMG. Words cannot describe the depth of flavors going on in this dish. First sip of the broth I got ginger and garlic. Next was the heat of chili peppers. The meat was fall apart tender, and the baby bok choy was crisp tender. I am having the leftovers for lunch today – I am just adding more veggies to it – water chestnuts and zucchini. I also like that you can watch them cook in the kitchen.
So Saturday night, I was supposed to be in the bar by myself. Awesome! They removed the middle tables for the dance floor, so I basically had an 8 table station. Sounds like a lot, but really the bar is a mixed bag. Some people are there to eat dinner, some just to have a drink before dinner, or some having after dinner drinks. But it ends up all evening out by the end of the night. I ended up with four tables pretty quickly – two for drinks and two for dinner. All of a sudden one of the bartenders comes from behind the bar and says that she’s going to be a server in the bar too. WTF. So she says “you got the first four tables so I will take the next four.” Huh. Turns out her next for are all 4 tops, they all eat dinner – then we switch back and forth. Sadly, all of my tables are drinks only, while hers are all food. By this time I am pissed, I know I am not going to make as much money and my foot is killing me.
So I told her that she could close, and after my last table paid at 10:20 I was out the door. I can’t really complain though – I worked 11 hours over the weekend and came home with a total of $350 – which is around $31 an hour – not too shabby!
Yesterday we both slept in – until 10:30! Sipped on coffee, I did some computer work, made Tony and I a quick breakfast – um, turns out Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage has 500 mg of sodium for two tiny sausage patties! I’ll have to see if they made a reduced sodium one, or I could just make it myself. I helped Tony sharpen the blades of the mower, and then while he mowed the lawn, I mopped the kitchen floor. Our fire pit needs some work – it’s a bit over grown!
I had forgotten I bought all the stuff to make my baja fresh salsa last week and never made it. So I grilled up my tomatoes and jalapeno – I got them extra charred on the grill – look at the deep color of this salsa – so smoky and delicious!
Baja Fresh Salsa
The secret to this salsa is the charred veggies - that gives the salsa that great smokey flavor.
Ingredients
- 7 firm tomatoes
- 1 jalapeno pepper
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
- juice of 1 lime (about 1 tablespoon)
Instructions
Toss the tomatoes, jalapeno and garlic (left in paper – thanks Tony for that idea!) in a bit of olive oil. When grill is at temperature, grill until they are charred – turning every 10 minutes or so. You want to make sure they are really blackened.
Put everything in the food processor and process until smooth. Cool before eating.
Notes
This is zero WW points.
I then went to the store – had a great grocery shop – only $69 (well $73 if you count the peanuts I bought for the squirrels!). We ended up doing a chicken on the Weber. I made baked potatoes and we split one and I had grilled broccoli on the side. I must have been hungry, because I never took a picture of my dinner plate! I put sliced lemon on the skin.
So last week I was:
This week I am:
So I lost 1.4 this week! I’ll take it. If I keep that up, I could lose up to 8 pounds in a month – my next goal is to see 159.9 again! And your welcome for the Band-Aid on my toe – you don’t want to see what’s going on under there. I am going to try to get into a foot doctor or our GP this week – nothing worse than having an infected toe for a diabetic!
So I hardly ever remember my dreams. But this morning I clearly remember it. Tony and I were on vacation and we were walking to dinner. We had no idea where we wanted to go, but all of a sudden I turn around and Tony is gone. Huh. So I keep walking thinking I’ll find a good place to stop and eat and call him to tell him to meet me. Only I look down at my phone and it’s completely dead. So I start walking through a neighborhood in the direction I think our hotel is supposed to be, when I find a bunch of people on a porch and ask if they have an iPhone charger. They do! So as I am hooking up my phone I ask them, since they are locals, where they like to eat out. The woman said “Land O Lakes Emporium.” I laughed and said “doesn’t that meat that everything there is made with butter?” to which she said “Yes, that’s why everything tastes so good!” Do you remember your dreams?
Alright, time to get the show on the road and put my food together. I think I’ll swim today because of my toe, but we’ll see how it feels later today. Happy Monday – make it a great day!
Is there a freaking recipe to the salsa??
Hi – good morning! Hope you are having a great start to your day.
This post is nearly 9 years old, and the recipe plug in I used is no longer available. I’ve update the recipe card for you – thanks for pointing it out to me that it was missing.
Have a great day!
Love the pic of Tony, he looks great.
Isn’t an open cascet common in the US? Here it’s pretty common unless someone doesn’t look that good due to illness or accident. Most of the times the cascet is in a separate room so you can choose yourself if you want to watch. R. and I never do, I’ve seen to many beloved ones in a cascet so as soon as it’s someone that’s not all that close to me, I skip it. I have been on 1 occasion where we went to pay our respects to a friend of R. and his father was in the living room and I had to sit next to it. Didn’t like it one bit.
Doing some catching up! I am so sorry about your toe. I hope it heals soon.
Also, we have a recipe for how to make your own sausage from lean ground beef. I’ll send them to you for inspiration! 🙂
xoxo
please send me your address i will send you some ointment for your toe , it will heal it so good you will never worry about it again , thank you Amelia Ireton from South Africa , so happy i found your blog again it was lost to my other computer x
When I read the title of this post I was definitely thinking, “Oh no! Another person with gout!” I swear, the world is running a special on gout lately. But yours sounds WORSE – OWWW! I hope you can get in soon. I don’t know why, but I literally fear ingrown toenails. They sound absolutely, positively horrible. 🙁
Tony looks great! And on a totally unrelated note, I hated that about serving. I felt like I always got the tables that never ordered dinner -and- drinks. It’s tough waiting tables and so I’m a very generous tipper 😀
P.S. I’ve made your salsa 2x already this year. People freaking LOVE it and hubby craves it.
I’ve never had an ingrown toenail but I can imagine it’s super painful! I know you take care of yourself and I’m glad you’re going to see a dr. about it b/c a lady at our church had her leg up to her knee amputated b/c of a diabetic foot ulcer and now it looks like she’s going to lose a toe on her remaining foot as well. 🙁
Tony is looking GREAT!
And Land ‘O Lakes Emporium! That needs to happen. LOL!
Ouchie on that toe! Hope it heals up soon for you.
I would have been livid about having to split the bar with another person. I really hope they get their crap figured out soon, because it seems like the food is an amazing stroke of genius. 🙂
I’m with Shelley B. I noticed your toe boo when you posted it originally and wondered if it was bothering you. Please keep a close eye on it.
Are you going to say anything to the manager about what happened. I know you still made out well for the two days it is just the principle of the thing. Congrats to Tony for his weight loss 🙂
Ouch on the toe. I am very susceptible to ingrown toenails too so I get pedicures every 2 weeks.( even in winter). To me, they are a medical necessity. LOL.
Just a thought on making your own breakfast sausage. I know Penzey’s has some great pre-mixed sausage seasonings. Congrats on weight loss and take care.
At first I thought you were describing “gout” sounded like my husbands toe when he gets gout. He soaks it as it gets swollen and red and hurts really bad. Gout has something to do with the “uric acids” tooo much sugar in the system. So we have to really cut down on sugar intake.
But when you said Tony dug out part of a nail….well, guess it was not gout. WHEW!!!! But do take care of that toe.
Yeah I have a lot of weird dreams too. I have heard that in your dream state, you are trying to work something out in your mind or solving a problem…..whatever…..sometimes those dreams sure can leave a question mark, like how in the world could I have dreamt something like that!!!!
Congrats on Tony’s weight loss and your’s too!!! Helps to eat good foods. Have a great day!!!
Please get your toe checked soon. I’m diabetic and had to have my middle toe on the rt. foot amputated 2 years ago. I injured my toe (always wear socks and shoes) walking up stairs and the toenail bent into the tip of the toe. My podiatrist just told me to watch it and never saw that the toenail embedded itself in the toe. I ended up going to a podiatrist at Mayo and he saw the embedded toenail and removed it. It took 3 surgeries to get it to heal. I had to wear special black sandals from Feb. thru Nov. until it healed. They said too much pressure on the toe (ulcer) would be like an elephant sitting on you toe. Don’t want you to have to go through what I had to (if it gets infected) so please get it checked out now. Good luck!
I didn’t notice it last week, but in the scale picture from then, you big toe wasn’t looking good. Get thee to a doctor, STAT.
Also (and I swear, I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer here), I love wonton soup, but I often choose it because of the high sodium content (like the night before I have a long sweaty humid run). Not sure that is good for Tony – but I will say, KUDOS, man – nice going with dropping some major weight! Slim Thug, indeed! 🙂
Oh, and I want to smack that bartender. Geez. I wonder if, because you are not full-time, they feel like they can push you around more?
Ouch! But I bet the chlorine will be good for your toe!
Here’s to another week – Happy Monday, Biz!
Hope it feels better soon, Biz! Sorry to hear about tony’s friend.
Hope that your big toe heals rapidly Biz! By the way, Great pic of your loving husband!!!!
Oh no! I hope your toe gets better fast. Congrats on the loss! Take care of yourself today!
Hope you get that toe checked out soon – sounds bad!!!
The only dreams I ever remember are usually scary ones!
Tony looks great – hope he’s feeling good.
Gosh, I hope your toe gets better quick and presents no serious issues! Sad about Biker Bob, especially leaving behind a young son.
Love Yu’s Mandarin!! Enjoy your leftovers!!
Good job on the weight loss!!
Beth, PLEASE be very careful with your toe! Being a diabetic, things can get very serious is a short period of time! If at all possible , have it checked out today. I would hate to see you end up in the hospital and have BAD things happen to your foot. Tony needs you at home and we need you here!!! : )
I had a weird scary dream where I lost my toddler.
An 8 year old can definitely understand losing a parent. My son is 8.
Sucks that you had to share your tables.
Good for Tony losing all that weight! I saw sub 150’s for a day, back up to 153 though. Need to get back at it.
My Mom was the world’s most careful diabetic and would not even walk in tall grass. Maybe you should get the toe checked if it doesn’t improve very quickly because it could be serious. I really don’t want to start your day on a sour note. I hope you have a GREAT day. 🙂
Ouch! Hope the toe feels better soon.
