I had such a fun weekend. I volunteered to watch my friend Alison and Cameron’s kids for 24 hours over the weekend. Big G is 7 and Baby G is 3. I knew it would be fun, but I forgot how much you have to pay attention to kids this little! I picked them up at 10:30 on Saturday and dropped them off at 10:00 on Sunday. Our first order of business after getting the girls was going to visit Hannah at the coffee shop for smoothies!
Big G said she loved the decorations and she could see herself coming back here. Baby G just loved her blueberry smoothie – blueberries are apparently her favorite fruit.
Next up? Craft fair!
There was a magician there who made them balloon animals, and like me, Baby G loved touching all the crafts. I ended up buying Baby G a snowman necklace, Big G some earrings and I bought myself a new pair of snowman earrings – how cute are they?!
On the way to the craft fair, Big G saw a Chipotle and declared that her favorite restaurant and asked if we could eat there. I hadn’t been in a while and it suddenly dawned on me as we were eating the food about the outbreak of illness I’d read recently in the news, but we were fine. Baby G loves guacamole!
Then it was time to head to my house. I had a couple crafts lined up. First up was decorating ginger bread houses. Um, it looked way easier online to put graham cracker houses together. Even though I’d made the houses in advance so they would have time to dry and set, as soon as the toppings were on top, they started falling apart. So LOTS of frosting was involved! Hannah was home from work by then and acted as the reconstruction enginner.
Then I had to do some laundry, and make the ornament dough, so Hannah set them up in her room to watch Transylvania, one of Hannah’s favorite movies. You’ll notice the dogs were napping on the bed!
Ornament dough could not be easier – 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup of water. That’s it. I had some cookie cutters so Hannah and I punched out the ornaments, baked them and the girls decorated them. You knew I had to make a snowman one!
I ended up making homemade mac n cheese for dinner and actually let them eat it on my new couch. Turns out Baby G is a slow eater, so we just watched Big Hero 6 while we ate. That was a good movie by the way.
Baby G reminds me SO much of Hannah it’s a bit freaky. She has the same hairline that Hannah did – Hannah’s hair took forever to come in. She also sucks her thumb like Hannah did and that picture on the lower left could be Hannah 21 years ago. Both girls sat as close to me as possible while watching the movie, it was really cute. We ended up sleeping in the living room. My thought was that we could all sleep on the sectional sofa, but Baby G wanted to sleep on the floor in her sleeping bag. But at about 1:45 a.m., I woke up to Baby G being about two inches from my face asking me “Can I Take A Nap With You?” Yep! So she slept with me the rest of the night – so sweet. I know their parents enjoyed being out and about without the kids, and I’d happily do it again.
After dropping them off I headed to my Mom’s church for their holiday potluck. Who doesn’t love a potluck?!
My Mom and I helped clean up afterwards, and I just had to laugh at a couple of the things I saw in the church drawers – cloves from probably 1972 since they cost $.19 and these Fairy birthday candles that cost $.10! After that I headed to my Mom’s house to help her put up her tree. We are celebrating with her and my sisters family on the Sunday after Christmas. And no trip to my Mom’s house would be complete without heading to the Goodwill! Neither of us had any intention of buying anything and we both spent about $40!
I had all these plans on baking a ton of stuff last night, but when I got home, I was just pooped, so I just caught up on some of my DVR shows and we ordered pizza – pepperoni and banana peppers!
So on Saturday night I had a lap full of two girls, which were replaced by two dogs last night.
Show of hands whose excited for a short work week! ME! Hopefully they will go by fast. Hannah and Jacob are so excited to give their gifts this year, if I would let them they would probably have me open everything up today, but they are holding out as best they can. But every once in a while one will tell me “you are going to REALLY love one of my gifts I’m getting you!” So sweet.
It’s a rainy day today, but high near 50, so I’ll take it. I’ll probably have to hit up the gym instead of walking at lunch today.
Alright, now I have exactly 15 minutes to get my shit together so I have time to stop by Hannah’s work to get my coffee. Make it a great day!
I love those snowman earrings! So pretty!
Also, I’m like Hannah and Jacob. It is SO HARD to wait to give gifts. I just love picking out the perfect gift and then seeing the reaction of the person I got it for.
I hope you all have a lovely Christmas!! <3
Biz,
What a great weekensd with the kids. Look like you all had a blast!. We all wrap our arms around you and give you a big hug. Tony and you are so cute. The good will here in NY is pretty good. I am not a regular though.
You Ur Mom Hannah and Jacob have a Verry Merry Christmas.
Ho Ho Ho
Larry
Come watch my three for the weekend, will ya?
What a great friend you are!! We help our friend out a lot with her 9yr old twins and its a lot of work!! You are brave!! At first I thought your vintage items were thrift store finds. The church could probably make some $$ on ebay for those items. I hope they are not still using those cloves!! LOL.
What a fun weekend! Little ones are so much fun to be around! I bet those sweet little girls will remember the fun they had with you for many years to come.
Just a quick warning though about the salt dough and dogs. I was reading in the new last week that a dog died from eating a salt dough ornament. I don’t have dogs myself, so I don’t know all the details, but please be cautious that those little cuties don’t accidentally eat them.
How fun! I am so looking forward to doing stuff like this–making gingerbread houses and homemade ornaments. This is what happy childhood memories are made of. 🙂
So excited for you Lisa – next Christmas will be awesome with your new baby! Yep, that’s what makes happy memories 😀
Did either of the kids try to taste the ornament dough? I’m imaging, “Ooh, yum, dough,” then “Oh dear God NO! Salt!”
Ha, no, but Jacob licked one – 😀
Glad you guys had fun!!! Kids are SO busy! I loved Big Hero 6. Kay didn’t really get into it and I was totally bummed. Maybe when shes a little older. Your mac and cheese looks delicious
I forgot how much paying attention I had to do – especially at the craft fair I was so nervous I’d lose one!
This post is SO fun. The kids are cuties, and I LOVE the snowman earrings!!! OMG, those old spices and candles? Classic!!!! Collector’s items for sure! Have a great day Vat!!!
Thanks Roz! And you know what? I didn’t even throw that old shit away, just put it back in the drawer 😀
Super cute weekend with the kiddos! Where do you get your pizza from at home? I know the Pizza Stop has been gone for a lot of years – that used to be my favorite. I like Nick’s Pizza in Crystal Lake.
This was from Rosatti’s – its okay – a Lou Malnati’s just opened up by the Walgreen’s in Cary, but it’s been getting mixed reviews out the gate so we will wait on that.
Love Nick’s Pizza too, but too far for delivery 😀
Lucky kids, they are going to beg to go back to your house! You should have stopped over for some nuts.
I thought about stopping by but I just assumed you would be busy the weekend before Christmas – next time I’ll just barge on over 😀
