It was funny because every day I would look at my weather app on my super cool iPhone 6+ (made my boss jealous that she didn’t have one – love it!) and every day, the next day would have a little rain cloud that there could be a chance of rain. However, each day it never rained, and it would predict that the very next day would possibly rain – each day it kept moving to the next day and we never had rain during the day once!
Being so close to the water, I knew I would take advantage of any shell fish I could get my hands on. While I am not a huge fan of fish (except for Ahi Tuna and Chilean Sea Bass – only like the most expensive fish to buy in the market – I couldn’t like cod or tilapia?!) I LOVE shell fish. When we stopped for lunch one day, the soup of the day was shrimp and lobster bisque. Done! Then they had shelled shrimp for $14 a half pound – sold! When I placed my order, the server asked “do you want the Key West Pink or the Royal Reds?” What the what? When I asked what the Royal Red shrimp was, she said that most people described it as tasting like lobster. Um, yes please! It was vacation after all, so I had a beer pretty much with every lunch out – this one was Shock Top.
If I ever have the chance to eat Royal Red shrimp I would do it in a heart beat – almost meaty in texture, but definitely tasted like a baby lobster tail – served with fresh horseradish sauce, cocktail sauce and drawn butter – yum!
We did a lot of walking around and shopping while we were there. I am not much of a shopper typically – you all know that I buy my clothes at thrift stores, Goodwill and garage sales. But, I had budgeted some money to shop – I bought these sandals that I immediately fell in love with – so comfy! I bought a pair of Speedo flip flops for my trip, but after the first couple hours of wearing them, I had blisters on each foot. I paid $74 for these sandals in Big Pine Key – in Key West every shop had these for $124! It’s like my Born shoes, I just have to realize that I need to spend the extra money for comfort!
I totally wanted to buy this, because it seemed to speak to me – especially being in Key West for the second time without Tony. But the $150 price tag was too much – Hannah and I think we can DIY this project at home at a fraction of the cost.
As much as I would give anything to have Tony back, deep down I think that he died so I could live. He always felt so bad that his sickness and physical limitations held me back, and I always told him that it didn’t matter. The more I biked or walked in Key West, I realized if he and I were there together I wouldn’t have been able to do 10% of what I was able to do with my Mom, Aunt and cousin. I can’t take the freedom I have of doing anything for granted, ya know?
And then I saw this in a shop:
I am truly taking that to heart, and appreciating everything because each day truly is a gift!
And not to think that I was so sentimental the whole week I was there, I couldn’t not take a picture of this – I would have bought it, but I have no idea who I would have given it to!
I know I’ve talked about it in a long ago post, but my Dad’s dream was to always sail on a sailboat. So much so that he created a replica of the boat that he would sail on. When we were little we lived in a townhouse – so our lawn was the size of a postage stamp and our backyard was basically the parking lot. My Dad would ask “who wants to sail the boat on Lake Pinto!” and we would follow our Dad out to our baby blue Ford Pinto and he would raise the sails and look at it longingly as the wind blew the sails. While it wasn’t quite as big as this one I found on google, the craftsmanship was just as good:
Mom, do we even have a picture of the sailboat Dad made? So when I saw this sailboat at sunset on our trip, I did get a bit teary. My Dad never realized his dream of sailing on an actual boat.
I actually LOVE how the picture turned out above – especially with the birds flying along side it. And again, I had to intersperse some laughter in with the heartache, and I am so glad that I took the picture below – I know it doesn’t even seem real, but my Mom is just under 4.10” tall, but I think this “shemale” was about 7+ feet tall!
I totally would have gone to one of their shows, but my cousin didn’t have any interest, and then the week just got away from us. I do have Baton in Chicago – I haven’t been there in years, but I think Hannah would get a kick out of it!
So here is a snipet of my day yesterday – my lunch nachos were delish! And I bought some spices at Key West Spicy Company, one of which was called Tuscany blend – OMG, so good! I added about 1/2 a teaspoon to my pasta dish and it was delicious!
Tomorrow is Hannah’s 23rd birthday! I can’t believe it. Last night she and Jacob went out – other than ordering a drink at a restaurant on her 21st birthday, she’s never ordered a drink in a bar before. Last night she texted me a picture of a Mai Tai – I asked her how it was and she said “it’s really strong so I had her add sprite to it!” I love this collage – especially since I tried to get her to love Tabasco as a baby – sadly, she doesn’t like spicy food – not sure where I went wrong with that child!
Have a great weekend! Make it a great day!
I love your trip, it’s so beautiful there.
During Summer I never wear flipflops anymore. I spend money on Birkenstocks that usually last 2 seasons. They are so great and comparable to the Merrels you bought. I think you made a good choice.
I see those bords with those text here a lot at the moment. I found one that I really wanted to have but it was too expensive. Now I can’t seem to find it anymore and I don’t know the exact words on it anymore. Boohoo!
Loving your recaps!! We were so inspired by your FB updates last week that we booked a trip back to Key West in August! We went in 2010 and loved it! Happy almost (well, today!) birthday to Hannah! It has been a joy to watch her turn into such an outstanding woman over the years through your blog! Her mom is a great example to learn by!!
That’s awesome!! So glad I inspired you guys to go back. It’s crazy that Hannah was 16 when I started this blog – thanks for keeping up with us! 😀
Looks like you are having an awesome time! I didn’t know merrill made sandals. I live in my merrill fleece lined clogs all winter. I am looking for comfy sandals and am going to check those out! I want those shrimp too!
OMG, they are so comfy! So many different styles of Merrill sandals too – happy shopping!
I would love to come down and go to Club Baton with you! We went to a drag show in Indianapolis about 6-7 years ago and the best performer had the title of something like “Miss Chicago” from Baton, so I’ve always kept that in the back of my mind as somewhere I’d want to go.
We should plan something this summer Jessica! 😀
Loving all of the pictures and emotions and things you took away from this trip, Beth!
Thanks Dana – it was just the getaway I needed! 😀
Mai Tais…..mmmmmm so tasty!!! 🙂
The beauty of your blog is that it can make me laugh and cry at the same time! Love the frogs.
I want that bike sign but $150 is ridiculous – even if it is reclaimed wood!
That is an interesting thought on Tony’s passing. I am glad to see you taking all opportunities that come your way.
Well you know I am going to agree that you should spend money on shoes LOL! For real, though, because of your special needs with your feet, you should go ahead and spend money on good shoes and leave the thrift shop for other things.
It’s so nice to see you really soaking up every opportunity you had in Key West. I think the timing of this trip was serendipitous.
You’ll be happy to know that I now own SIX pairs of shoes – two are gym shoes and one are flip flops, but I am getting there! 😀
Oh my gosh, Biz you shock me now with 6 pairs of shoes 🙂
I’m so glad that you are living a full life right now – I think that you appreciate all the little things because you were also happy being with Tony!!!
I’m like you – on vacation there are no rules – beer at lunch, wine at dinner……
Happy birthday tomorrow to Hannah!!!
So glad you enjoyed your trip, you deserve it!! I bought the same spice when I was there. I also bought a few other things. Love that store. I bought a few cups at the Tervis store next to the spice store. I use them everyday for my iced coffee. I got the Mile 0 and another Welcome to Key West. I try to buy a Tervis everywhere I go. We have over 40 of them!!
What a great recap of the trip! I’m sitting here freezing in my office and now all I want to do is eat shrimp and wear something besides a sweater. 🙂
So glad that you had such a wonderful trip, Biz! I have bullets for you today!
> I love that you had such beautiful weather and that it did not rain! As a fellow Midwesterner, we just need to get out of the cold this time of year.
> I’ve never heard of Royal Reds, but those look so good!
> Those shoes – you know you will wear them for years to come. I just read a budget blog post recently about “price per wear” or something like that. The author made a comment about how silly it is that we will pay more for a dress that we wear to a wedding or special occasion once or twice, but how we have trouble spending maybe $200-$300 on a very nice, well-made winter coat that we love and fits well when we will wear it every day for 4 to 6 months out of a year. Plus if we love it, we’ll probably wear it for several years. I never thought about it that way. It got me thinking… Shoes are important – not only for comfort, but for our feet, knees and back for years to come!
> $150 for that? Yes, you could make that for 1/10 of the cost – and even be a little more creative using parts of a bicycle or anything you can find at a thrift store.
> What you can do now – that’s a great way of looking at things.
> I find that while traveling or on vacation, reflecting and recalling memories comes more naturally. Perhaps because we are more relaxed, because we are happy and not thinking of all of the daily things we need to get done. So glad you were able to have such a wonderful vacation with people you love!
I think I’ve overused my daily allotment of exclamation points.
Cheers~
Carrie
You know how I love your bullet point comments Carrie! Um, your trip to Australia was way more adventurous than our trip to Key West – I am loving all your recaps – not sure I’ll ever travel that far, so it is fun to see it through your eyes!
Your revelation about Tony is interesting, and it sounds like you are going to take full advantage of this next stage in your life to live it fully, which is what he would have wanted.
Growing up in a sailing club (and on the west coast), it’s so odd for me to think that your dad never got to sail! Just another reason for you to go for it with all new things.
It’s 9:20 a.m. and I’m wondering where I can get some of those red shrimp!! So glad you had such a great trip with your family. Such sweet memories to come flooding back to you.
Best,
Bonnie
Ow! Those shrimp sound divine! I don’t like fish at all, but I do like most shellfish! Glad you got the shoes- comfort totally is key when you’re walking around that much. The shemale picture? Ridic! Happy birthday Hannah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being the coldest winter on record here in the Buffalo area……average temp about 13 degrees below Alaska’s average….frozen does not even describe it. This morning it is a balmy 5 below and wind chill even worse. So all we say here is……..lets head for the Keys! Am enjoying every tiny tidbit you share from there and also those great pictures! I now possess four new “real fur” coats. The ONLY material that I have found that can even begin to keep me warm. Now I see the need for real fur! Burrr And I lost 70 lbs and that makes me even colder!!! No flab to be found to warm me up since I went from 220 to 147. All new clothes! Yippie! I have now earned the right to just stand in the mirror and stare with a grin on my face!
I love all the pictures! The weather is the best when it forecasts bad weather that doesn’t happen, but not so much the opposite!
Ah, your comments about Tony made me tear up. I am so glad you are able to do so many wonderful things now, but are appreciating them all that much more because of him. Looks like you had such a killer time in FL and I am drooling over all your fresh seafood pics.
And hey, WTF is going on with the weather today? It was supposed to be 34 and sunny I was all excited to walk with B this am but its like 2 out. GRRRRRR!
I think this trip was just what you needed! I need to get to Key West one day and eat my weight in those shrimp!!! And I love that your mom is the size of that man’s leg!! HA! She’s so cute!
