I realized yesterday that because of modern technology, everyone not only wants, but expects instant gratification. Case in point. My boss needed some new flight times. I was at the gym when she tried to get a hold of me. She called me six times and sent me three emails in a matter if 15 minutes. I got back to the office within 15 minutes of the last email, and in a matter of minutes, had her booked on a new flight. I literally hung up the phone with the travel agent, only to get an email from her asking how come she hadn’t gotten her new itinerary yet.
But I find myself expecting it too – if I call Tony and he doesn’t answer and then send him a text and he doesn’t reply right away, I think “oh my gosh, something must be wrong!” Or, he could just be picking up the mail outside!
This is how it goes with weight loss too I think. It’s January, we’ve got our “I can do it” pants on and now we in the second half of the month and you may already be thinking “is it worth it?” I am not seeing the huge results yet! But hang tight. You need to make each day count, and when you string enough of those together, you’ll see the results you are looking for. Before we know it, it will be June 1 and then you can look back and see how far you’ve gone because you stuck with it. Just take it one day at a time.
Before I get onto my day, I found a new product that has helped me immensely. Every winter I get cracked hands. Especially around my thumbs – so much so that I usually have to wear bandaids because when I work with paper all day it makes them worse and digging into files they can actually bleed. I saw an infomercial about this product, and was surprised to see it at Bed Bath & Beyond. I decided to give it a try.
I put it on at night and in the morning and within ONE DAY my cracks are completely gone. Totally worth the $6.99 price tag, and it doesn’t smell bad either – just a nice fresh clean scent.
More awesome blood sugars. Before working out, it was 81 – I only took 2 units of insulin and ate another Balance Bar – this one tasted like a thin mint cookie!
Cardio #1 – 20 minutes on the treadmill at 5.0% incline:
Then it was chest and triceps. This set took me 20 minutes too. I was actually using 15 pound weights for my failure sets on the flys!
Then finished up my second Cardio – 20 minutes on the bike:
You would think that after a 60 minute workout, I would be starving, but those balance bars really stick with me. I think maybe I’ll eat only half, because Heather told me that to get the most out of your workout, you need to refuel within 30 minutes of working out.
When I got back to my office, I went to test my blood sugar and I got this weird error message:
I had my insulin bag in the car during my workout at the gym – turns out that means it’s too cold to work! I ended up sticking it under my armpit for about 5 minutes. My after workout blood sugar – 136 – nice!
I had more potato crusted broccoli quiche and 4 baby clementines.
One of the secretaries at work was out, so I was pretty busy – made the morning fly by. I went back to the gym at lunch – you all will be so jealous – empty pool just for me! I swam for 30 minutes in solitude. Love.
When I was putting my food together yesterday, I saw in the freezer that I had some of Tony’s tex mex soup leftover so I just threw that in a bag and tossed in a container of chicken broth to add when I heated it up. On the side I had a chicken avocado wrap.
Well, sad to say, once this soup was reheated, the rice tasted all funky. The flavor was still spicy and good, but I couldn’t get over the taste of the rice. But I had already taken enough insulin as if I HAD eaten the soup, so I cut up an apple and scooped out 2 tablespoons of this amazeball peanut butter for dipping. So fricken good – it’s cinnamony, crunchy and just plain delicious – worth the 180 calories for 2 tablespoons!
When I was leaving the office, the moon looked so cool – this picture doesn’t do it any justice, I wished I had had my telephoto lens with me!
I left my camera setting on that last setting. I made Cincinnati Chili over the weekend to make a super quick weeknight meal. Just have to boil and cook the pasta and you are good to go. Tony loves this chili because it’s not too spicy and there are no beans. But after scooping out his portion, I added the rest of the black beans and corn leftover from my chipotle chicken bowl. I had mine over 3/4 cup of pasta, 1 cup of chili, 1/2 ounce of shredded cheddar cheese and fresh chopped cilantro. LOVE cilantro on chili!
I was thrilled with this picture because usually my night time, fluorescent lighted kitchen takes crap ass pictures. But I realized that I had left the settings the same as when I took my moon pictures – f/4, exposure speed was 1/60 and the ISO was 800. Yep, I’ve had my DSLR camera for over three years and I am still learning how to use it!
Tony had some MMA fights he wanted to watch, so I got to catch up on Biggest Loser. I think the finale is in three weeks? Rachel is my favorite – so glad that she found the athlete she once was again!
And since Tony’s been back home, I have no desire to eat any crap after dinner – so weird, but now that he’s home and I am back into my routine, everything just . . . fits. And the food I am eating is satisfying, so I don’t find myself looking for something else to eat.
Today is a rest from strength training – just cardio, so I’ll do that at lunch. I think I’ll do the stair master for a nice sweat at lunch today.
I haven’t done any link love in a while! If you are having trouble meal planning, Andrea has it down to a science. Check out her Meal Planning 101 here.
And Nicole made this delicious Sweet and Spicy Pork with Noodles soup that is definitely going on my lunch menu next week. The only thing I think I’ll add is some lemongrass to the broth – I love the citrus note lemongrass adds to broth.
And as soon as I saw Ally’s Smothered Italian Chicken Breasts with Garlic Buttered Spaghetti, my mouth completely started to water. I have leftover spaghetti and I have an idea of making chicken parmesan spaghetti nests in my muffin tin based on her recipe. In my mind it works out, but we’ll see!
I have time to do 20 minutes of stretching before putting my stuff together. Make it a great day!
I don’t like it at all that we have to answer every mail/phone call immediately. R. once came home angry because I didn’t pick up the phone. I often leave my phone downstairs on the table when I’m upstairs, I don’t have to be available 24/7, if it’s urgent: call me back or leave a voicemail. Anyway he said I had to take my phone upstairs. I said “okay, where do I put the phone when I’m in the shower?” Because when he called I was taking a shower 🙂
As for the weight loss: I need to lose a lot this time but I’m going to be patient. I won’t lose it overnight and it might take a whole year and there will be bad days. But my goal is to make a lifestyle change that I can stick to the rest of my life.
It’s also funny somehow that I’m starting with this on Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year 🙂 Hey if I can make it through today it can only get easier right? 🙂
I think with all the time your boss spent trying to get a hold of you she could have changed her own flight!
Fantastic moon photos. I can’t wait for dinner time natural light for good food photos again!
Yes, small changes done consistently bring big results! 🙂 Just think where you’ll be on June 1 – one year after you recommitted to your healthy journey! 🙂
And it’s crazy how quickly we expect a response…
I enjoy your blog and have been a “creeper” for a while. I, too, have just discovered Working Hands. I like that it doesn’t have much of an odor. My skin was so dry and cracked that my hands looked like really old lady hands. I also use Aquaphor ointment on my hands at night and wear soft gloves. There is a vast improvement and my skin looks healthy.
Hey Betty! Thanks for coming out of the woodwork! Yep, so far so good – no more cracks 😀
you are totally right about the instant gratification thing. I fear it is only going to get worse. Not good.
I just got my dslr, and I think it will be decades before I actually learn to use it! lol
You can find youtube videos! those have been pretty helpful – I just need to find the time to practice 😀
Would you believe that I bought that lotion for my hubs for Christmas but can’t find where on earth I left it!?!?!? I also bought the foot one for my FIL and kept up with it. Glad to hear it works! Now I need to find it just for myself.
My sister said that she also found it at Ace Hardware of all places!
Thanks for the plug Biz!
You’re welcome! Thanks for the awesome recipe 😀
I agree with the above – tech means we’ve lost the ability to be patient and wait!
I think part of that is because tech makes it easier to multitask. So we are all working on more things at once. Unfortunately that also means that we are likely to forget something if we don’t get to it quickly. AT least, that’s how it is for me.
Your pictures are looking good! Great workouts too. I need to work out more, but I seem to get sick when I do. So today, just gonna go for a short walk at lunch. I did some pushups and crunches this morning.
Funny you mentioned instant gratification. My coworker has been driving me nuts because since she came here in april, she’s gained 35 lbs (I think just a few before april). My work has all kinds of crap to eat. She wanted to eat healthy come the new year but nope…doesn’t want to stop eating the crap. She talks about me helping her run but nope. She doesn’t make any advances towards losing weight. Today she said she wishes she could just snap her figures. I said everyone does! She is so frustrating. I don’t want to hear complaining if you aren’t making any steps towards something.
On to the rest. I should try getting that cream for my mom’s hands. Her hands are always cracked because she has reynaud’s syndrome.
That granola bar looked delicious! Thin mints really? My favorite!! I would try eating half of it before you work out and maybe half during or after. Those things are pretty big! Hard to stop eating it when it tastes so good!!
Lastly, I’m thinking we need to have lunch or something one day. Maybe when the weather gets nicer, I can come out your way on the weekend or something and we can do a short run and have lunch! We’ve “known” each other way too long!
That would be awesome Amanda! Yep, definitely when it warms up! 😀
Weight loss and maintenance are a marathon rather than a sprint. It’s often a very frustrating concept. I still hope for that magic pill to help me lose the last 15 pounds, but realistically I know that I need to trust the process that has seen me through a 75 pound weight loss.
Instant gratification certainly makes raising a child interesting. My son really hates when I encourage him to simply sit…no electronics, no book, no distractions. When I lived in Africa I was fascinated by people’s ability to sit for hours on a bus or stand in long lines with nothing to do, no distractions. Even children were able to do it without fidgeting or misbehaving.
Haha – I would probably smack your boss! I get impatient with weight loss, too. I have a good day and then am annoyed that I haven’t lost 10 pounds overnight 😀
So glad you are getting back into your “normal” routine. I just got some news yesterday that I will be sharing in my next blog post; my entire routine is about to be flipped upside down and all around! I am very excited but very nervous about such a major shift in my schedule, but hey, that’s life, right?! 🙂
That’s exciting Erin – can’t wait to hear all about it! 😀
Saved as a favorite, I love your blog!

– Delia,
OMG – I made Ally’s chicken n garlic spaghetti…SOOO GOOD! and easy. Kiddos loved it. I WANT THAT PEANUT BUTTER, but fear the sugar and sodium numbers. But with an apple it’s all good. I’m going to look for it- never seen it before.
You will be surprised – for 2 tablespoons its 11 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fiber, 5 grams of sugar and only 130 mg of sodium!
perfect, thanks Biz, I’m shopping tomorrow – I hope i see it.
That smothered chicken looks so good – thanks for the link!!!
I like Rachel the best, too although cowboy is a close second!!!
And, the whole instant gratification kills me – I have had a couple people call my cell, home and send a text all in a matter of minutes which to me implies an emergency but not the case usually!!!
Patience is a virtue and technology has wiped that out. Good reminder that it needs to be practiced with weight loss and healthy living!
Your moon photos are so pretty. We’ve had clouds and the craziest heavy, heavy fog at night and not been able to see it.
It all started with the microwave…I want it NOW! LOL – but you are right, we are in this for the long haul. Besides, if the weight magically disappeared overnight, where would the appreciation be?
I like Rachel, too – I hope she wins, although there’s not anyone I’d be upset to win. Seems like they didn’t get any nasty contestants this time, which makes it more pleasant to watch.
One of the many reasons I love your blog : “I ended up sticking it under my armpit for about 5 minutes. ” hahahha. You crack me up! We definitely do live in a world of instant gratification. That chili mac looks amazing. I think I need it in my life. I’m so glad its Thursday. This week has been so slow for me!
I’m the same way – my phone is always within reach. When, really, it doesn’t need to be. That’s kind of why I get away from the computer on the weekends – I need a break!
Good reminder on weight loss patience! Thanks! January’s half over already and each day is getting longer – enjoy 🙂
Patience seems to be a lost virtue now that everyone seeks instant gratification. I guess we owe this phenomena to the tech world!
