Some mornings I am in a whirlwind. I might do a load of laundry, while cooking soup or baking a quiche, downloading my pictures from the day before, blog, put food together, etc. And it’s funny because I never used to be a morning person. I timed it that I could actually sleep until 8:16 and still get to my desk by 8:45. Granted, my commute was a lot shorter then, but now I actually like that I have an hour or an hour and a half to do stuff before heading out the door.
So when I finally carried all my shit to the car, I opened the door and sitting on the drivers seat was a basket of goodies from Tony!
It had Buffalo wheat things, heart crackers, a spicy chili dipping oil, a zester, and FOUR different kinds of cheese! The first one I tried was a cranberry brie – amazeballs! Thanks for all the loot Tony! I love you!
While I know my boss likes a sweeter breakfast, I decided to make an egg white hash with diced ham, potato and spinach. Strawberries and baby bananas on the side with a small piece of sourdough toast. She loved it.
One secretary called in sick and the other secretary already had scheduled a half day, so I didn’t get to work out. I took the right amount of insulin with breakfast, and when the other secretary offered to stay a little longer to let me go workout, my blood sugar wasn’t high enough. “ Thanks anyway though J!
I decided to make panani’s for my other boss and myself. I still have that goat cheese I got at 50% off a couple weeks ago. I stopped at Panera on my way to work and picked up a loaf of sourdough bread. Sourdough bread is hands down my favorite bread. Blogger Melanie has given me a sourdough starter recipe that I think I’ll start this weekend. Thanks again Mel!
Doesn’t everyone bring their panini maker to work? Tony isn’t a big fan, and since Hannah moved out, I am the only one that uses the machine, so it might make a regular appearance for our lunches. Our sammies? Rosemary ham with goat cheese and thin sliced gala apples.
We both loved this combo – the sweetness of the apple against the sourness of the goat cheese, then the salty kick from the ham – after two bites my boss just said “I am a happy girl!”
One of the other items in my V-day basket was this jar of pickled asparagus.
I’ve always told Tony that I think I didn’t like asparagus growing up was because I remember it being in a can and dark green and wilty. However, these asparagus were crisp, spicy and oh so vinegary in the best way. It’s funny because it said a serving is 1.5 spears for 10 calories. Who’s going to cut one in half??!!
Steak was on the menu – Tony picked up a ribeye for us to split. Since most of our snow is melted, we fired up the grill. I turned it on to heat up and handed the steak over to Tony. He said “did you turn the grill on?” We ran out of gas! Luckily, we always have a back up – whew! Crises averted.
Tony cooked it perfectly medium rare.
We enjoyed a bottle of this too:
I didn’t go on the computer once last night. Tony and I caught up on our DVR shows that we mutually watch. I still have Biggest Loser and American Idol to watch over the weekend.
So this morning, when I went to download my pictures, Tony was nice enough to change our wallpaper on the computer. Looking at KERF pictures all day must have gotten him in the Valentine mood yesterday – ha!
I am not doing Souper Friday at my office today because I didn’t want to spend last night in the kitchen. However, I am making a butternut apple squash soup for me and my boss – if it turns out I’ll post the recipe tomorrow.
Hope you all got hugs and kisses yesterday, well, and every day for that matter!
This weekend is Lori’s Heart Healthy Weekend Challenge! Her challenge is to just get moving 1 of the 3 days from February 15-17. I plan on doing a 5k each day. Last year I won a bag of her roasted coffee which is so good! It’s not to late to join – just click on the above link.
Make it a great day and Happy Friday!
That cranberry brie looks amazing!!
What a thoughtful guy you have there!!
Aren’t rib eyes the best? We enjoyed them at our cooking class on Thursday night. We cooked them over a charcoal grill, which, in my opinion is the only true grilling. They were to DIE for!
that’s so sweet! i love the idea of starting my day with such a fun basket. the cheese sounds SOO good!
I’m so glad you have such a wonderful hubby! I’m really digging your panini.
I love that Tony got you a spicy shit and cheese basket! Awe..that’s love indeed!
Put goat cheese on anything and I am in. God I love that stuff!
I buy this most incredible butternut squash soup at earthfare market. At first I thought the sweet undertones were coming from apples, then I finally read the ingredients and they use sweet potatoes along with the squash. OMG, it’s amazing. I’m going to try to duplicate it sometime. It’s the best butternut squash soup I have ever eaten.
I actually have to add heat to the sweet, so I added crushed red peppers to balance it out – it kind of looked like baby food, but it was delicious!
Girl you crack me up. What do you charge your boss again for meals? Such a great idea.
I charge my bosses $5 a meal for the cost of ingredients and my time. My Souper Fridays cost $4. I didn’t make it today and everyone was bummed, but now I have to do lenten soups now – no meat on Fridays!
What a cool gift basket! I’ll have to look for those crackers…yum! The cranberry brie looks delish! That panini sandwich sounds delish. I have a recipe for ham, smoked gouda and gruyere all on puff pastry to try soon. I can’t wait, the pictures I seen are drool-worthy, hope mine turns out! Sounds like you guys had a wonderful night 🙂
What an awesome surprise in your car, go Tony! We actually used our grill this week for the first time in probably a year and a half. I will definitely be using it more and want to try that grilled romaine you do for your caesar salad. Have an awesome weekend.
The cranberry brie looks amazing!! And I love that Asti–it’s so crisp and slightly sweet–yum. We fired up the grill last night, too! We grilled a bison filet mignon and broccoli. It was so nice to have food off the grill again. I can’t wait for summer! Or at least a few degrees warmer so I don’t mind going out on the patio to start up the grill. 🙂
I was actually changing the gas tank in my bare feet last night – a bit too cold for that! Tony got that cheese at Mariano’s – definitely check it out next time you go there. 😀
AWWWW….what a lovely gift, and how sweet to find it on the seat of your car! That man is a keeper!!! I hope your employer and coworkers know YOU are a keeper too. OMG…the meals you make? LUCKY LUCKY people! Have a great Friday!!
Glad you and Dennis had some bubbly last night too! Happy Friday and I hope you have some thrifting in your near future! 😀
Tony is a keeper! That’s a great gift!
I loved your “then and now” guest post about how you used to do Valentine’s before kids and now after kids – you guys need to read this!

I that Tony placed the gift basket it the car, an unexpected surprise awaited you. I love ham, so the sandwich is a winner! Hope you have a great weekend.
Thanks Tammi – you too!
You’ve got a winner in Tony. I can’t think of anything–and I’m being serious–more romantic than getting cheese for Valentine’s day. Sigh.
Keep me posted on the starter. It took me a few shots when I first started, but after I started using the microwave as proofing box, I had complete and total success.
Have a great weekend.
Yep, Tony is a keeper alright! You will be the first person I contact if I need help with the starter. 😀
Tee hee on the KERF pic. Sounds like a great day.
On the panini maker…I work in manufacturing and we have people working 24/7. Our shift workers are on 4 shifts, ABCD. C shift became known as the shift that always ate together. D shift also but I never see them, they are on nights.
So now, our office, and our TINY kitchen (one little piece of counter really, and a table with four chairs) has a panini maker, a George Foreman, a toaster oven, two rice cookers, two crockpots and I think an electric fry pan. C shift cooks a few days a week mostly in the crockpot. But the panini maker gets regular use.
We had panini’s again today – with the cranberry brie and ham – awesome combo!
He got you cheese? He is a fantastic husband! Yesterday I had to go to the car 3 times in a row to carry ‘stuff’ in. Backpacks, jackets, clothes, equipment, you name it it’s in there.
TONY! What a sweet sweet gift! Food gifts are the bestest. IMO. I want those asparagus- where did he get them??? And that sandwich? Yum! Seriously- come work with me!!
He actually got those asparagus at Big Lots of all places! So good – of course I love all things vinegar. 😀
