Tony and I woke up yesterday morning at 7:30. I decided that was WAY too early to get up on a Saturday, so I turned over and went back to sleep, only to wake up at 9:00 – and I still needed to blog and get out the door at 10:00 to meet my Mom! But being the low maintenance gal that I am, I was ready! But as I was leaving the house I thought “I didn’t eat breakfast!”
I think I got this bar from Michelle at our blogger meet up at Christina’s – way back in October!
I actually liked it!! It was really chewy:
I picked up my Mom and we headed to lunch – but it wasn’t opened yet, so we went across the street to an antique store. I thought Mel and J would appreciate this picture!
We walked around for about 10 minutes, then headed back the restaurant – it just opened a few weeks ago, and it’s on Madison Street in Forest Park.
We thought we had plenty of time since she didn’t have to be at her volunteer job until 1:00. We both ordered brown rice with our meals, but first started with shrimp rolls – we both thought they were a tad overdone, but the dipping sauce was really good!
Then we waited, and waited, checked our watch because we were on a tight schedule at this point. The server came up to us and said that they were just waiting for the brown rice to cook. What? You wouldn’t have started the brown rice at ten in the morning? So we quickly changed to white rice and had about 10 minutes to eat 🙁
I ordered the hot and spicy basil dish with tofu – this was so flavorful!!
We actually asked for our bill when our lunch was served to save a little time! I would go back though, it was that good – lunch for us only came in at $23 – nice! 😀
My mom volunteers at a place called the Economy Shop in Oak Park. It’s a big Victorian house, that has different items in every room – one room may have electronics, another housewares, yet another books and magazines. You could literally spend HOURS in this place!
Look at all the magazines!!! No, I didn’t buy any, but cookbooks were 50% off, so I may have bought 5 cookbooks. Shh….don’t tell Tony!
Check out these green stamps! Raise your hand if you remember green stamps!
I remember we had a drawer in our kitchen dedicated to green stamps in books – Mom, what did you ever end up getting with the stamps – I don’t remember!
Guess who met me at the Economy Shop?? My twin sister! I am on the right – can you see my beautiful eyebrows?!
When I got back home, I had a package from Karena – my BSI win for tofu!
She gave me this cute tote too!
Of all the loot she gave me, I am especially excited to try this – I love mustard!
While I was out, Tony got stuff to make dinner. He is an amazing cook! I just hog the kitchen most of the time! What’s great about Tony’s cooking is that he just puts stuff together – no measuring, no recipe. On the menu last night? Pork! He seared a pork tenderloin on top of the stove, added a little chicken broth, water, green peppers, garlic and red wine and cooked it low and slow at 250 degrees.
It was so tender it almost fell apart! So tender!
Then he reduced the sauce in the pan, added some flour and used the stick blender for a sauce to be put over egg noodles. It was delicious!
I woke up this morning and realized I hadn’t done anything for the BSI this week – cocoa powder! I had pancakes on the brain, so I decided to make Pumpkin Chocolate Pancakes.
Pumpkin Chocolate Pancakes
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoons Splenda brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
- 3/4 teaspooon cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 – 12 ounce can of fat free evaporated milk
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Mix dry ingredients in one bowl. Mix wet ingredients in another. Mix until well combined.
Each pancake comes in at 116 calories, 4 fat, 16 carbs, 1.4 fiber and 3.9 protein.
A perfect way to start a Sunday morning!
While at my Mom’s house yesterday, I grabbed some of my Dad’s artwork. You can see my tribute post to my Dad here. Back in 1985 he decided to come up with a comic strip – one of his artist idols was Charles Shultz. It was a comic strip about a chef and all the wacky antics that can happen in a kitchen. He even went so far as to submit the strip to a publisher in Florida. He worked hundreds of hours on this project. He shipped it off, got a dink letter, then put everything in a giant envelope and never talked or looked at it again!
I hadn’t seen it in years, but my Mom let me take it home – I am still going through all the materials, so I’ll leave you with this – and plan on showing off more of my Dad’s artwork in the coming weeks.
I am sure I got my love of food and cooking from my Dad – and if he were alive, he would have been the best food blogger – he was also an accomplished photographer!
Plans for the Day:
- menu plan
- grocery shop
- maybe lunch out with Tony?
- laundry!
- cry about the 8 – 12 inches of snow that’s predicted overnight tonight! 🙁
so glad the package got to you in one piece! got a little worried when i realized they didn’t have anything to stuff the box with at the post office! my favorite of the two mustards is the spicy apple – SOOO good on sandwiches and pretty much anything hehe. and the chili sauce works well in all types of dishes from pastas to stir fries! 🙂
Hey biz 😀 how many pancakes does your recipe make?
Hey Sally – mine makes between 10 and 12 usually – hope that helps! 😀
Thanks a ton! These would be great for a saturday pancake breakfast (:
LOL at the green stamps. My dad worked for S&H when I was growing up! He said the most popular item in the catalog was a cat scratching post!
The company offered competitive academic scholarships to employee’s children and I won one. I used to joke that I used green stamps to go to college.
My husband and I were just talking last night how meat in the crock pot is to die for! It just melts in your mouth and almost loses the consistency of meat. So delicious!
Looks like OP in the background of you and your twin! 🙂
Have a great week, Biz!!
Omg, how weird but I was just telling my niece ( on Saturday night) about shopping at Publix( in FL) when I was a kid and filling up the books with green stamps.
Just because something has an expiry date doesn’t mean it’s not good to use still. It’s not the only reason products have them. I’ve eaten lots of stuff long since expired. The odd time though I can’t bring myself to do it…lol.
This week I went grocery shopping and accidentally got dark cocoa instead of regular. I made a dark chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. SOOO rich, almost too rich for me. Best part about cooking mistakes is I get to try it all over again. 🙂
I remember Green Stamps! And believe it or not I just threw out at least 100 full books of Green Stamps about 3 years ago. They were stashed in an old crock I keep on a high shelf.
Can not believe the restaurant cooks brown rice per order! WOW….who has the time to wait!
I think pancakes make Sundays complete! oh and 90210 reruns lol
your dad was so talented!
Wow, your dad was really talented! I bet some of his drawings would make for a great blog header/design…
Cute pic of you and Jenn (and yes, your eyebrows look impeccably groomed!).
Looks like a great lunch (despite the brown rice dilemma). So cool that you have a twin sister. Are ya’ll a lot alike or really different? Tony looks like an awesome cook…but I really want a bite of those pancakes 🙂 Good luck with BSI!
We love the same things, but we are definitely two different people – I kind of was “in charge” of us growing up – I did the talking for both of us too! 😀
Those shrimp rolls…yum.
8-12 inches of snow? Winter needs to end. Like now.
Looks like a super day. I did the same thing to when I woke up and I went back to bed for almost 2 hours. That spicy apple mustard or whatever it was looks so good. I am a sucker for mustard.
Green stamps – ah, that takes me back! I recall hoarding and then cashing them in to get stuff – mostly for the kitchen. When the program went obsolete, I’m sure there were stray books and stamps buried somewhere. Mmmm… that pork looks just yummy!
I don’t know where to begin – LOVE Thai food!! It’s in 2nd place for my favorite cuisine. Those pancakes look scrumptious and that mustard? YUM! Your dad’s artwork is phenomenal. I can’t wait to see more!
BAHHH – no more snow!! We’re supposed to get 6-8 and I’m trying not to think about it!
Snow, snow go away!
We were predicted to get sleet but the temp was *just* high enough that it ended up being only rain…and thank goodness because we’re getting a lot of rain!
The pork looks great – I mostly cook that way as well, My mom is a recipe follower & it makes her nuts when she asks how I made something. lol I’m getting better about wriing things down but measure spices?? No way!
How very cool about your dad’s comic. Can’t wait to see more.
Have a great week!
Lynn
Awww Biz I LOVE your dad’s comic idea!! Please show us more, that will be fantastic! Then also his dream can live on through your blog w/ many eyes seeing what he worked so hard on! 🙂
Tony’s pork dinner looks TO DIE FOR! That’s how I cook too. J is always bragging about it when ppl ask about my cooking. He’s a recipe follower and measurer. We even have these little measuring spoons for “dash,” “pinch,” and “smidgen.” And I SWEAR to you – if a recipe he’s cooking says “dash” of salt he actually gets that little spoon out and measures it! So funny to me!! 😛
I’ve already been weeping inside since Friday when I found out about this darn 8-12″ of snow prediction. I’m SO ready for Spring, I feel like I’m gonna bust!!!
Those pancakes look fantastic!! I love putting pumpkin in pancakes. 🙂 Thanks for letting me know about BSI this week – I submitted my Big Pimpin Oats! 🙂
Nice find, Schlitz is one of J’s favorite beers, although only out of the bottle! 🙂
Your dad’s artwork is amazing, I’m looking forward to seeing more of it in the coming weeks!
