Okay, so I guess I didn’t realize that the tempura battered ahi tuna on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives was actually a TUNA ROLL that had a tempura batter! So my tuna was just dipped in tempura batter, and even at like 1 minute in the wok, it was overcooked.
![p3060082-640x480 I guess the rice of the roll helped keep the tuna rare](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060082-640x480.jpg)
But I did pick up a wine that Tony liked!
![p3060063-640x480 He always says I like wine that tastes like nothing - but this one had a nice bite to it!](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060063-640x480.jpg)
For an appetizer, I made Tony a half dozen escargot:
![p3060065-640x480 they sell these for only .69 cents each already with the herbed butter - the best part is that I can reuse the shells with canned escargot and my own herbed butter](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060065-640x480.jpg)
And I picked out two perfect avocados!
![p3060064-640x480 so creamy!](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060064-640x480.jpg)
But I guess I forgot to tell Tony that the sauce was an AVOCADO wasabi sauce, so he thought the sauce I made was full metal jacket wasabi! So I get to the table and see that he’s put all the avocado sauce with soy sauce! It was the perfect balance of avocado, garlic paste and wasabi!
![p3060069-640x480 Tony was wondering why the wasabi was so creamy! :D](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060069-640x480.jpg)
![p3060076-640x480 We decided to use the wok as a deep fat fryer - I used my candy thermometer to regulate the temperature](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060076-640x480.jpg)
![p3060081-640x480 the broccoli was good!](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060081-640x480.jpg)
![p3060083-640x480 I also made sliced tempura zucchini](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060083-640x480.jpg)
![p3060084-640x480 Hannah loved the shrimp!](http://biz319.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p3060084-640x480.jpg)
So while the dinner wasn’t a total loss, it just didn’t have the WOW factor that I was going for, and it was a lot of prep time and cook time and it made my kitchen a mess. So while I was moping immediately after dinner, I have regrouped and I am okay about it!
And how can I not be okay IT’S HANNAH’S 17TH BIRTHDAY TOMORROW! So stop on by and leave her a Happy Birthday Comment tomorrow! Her birthday wishes are simple:
- Visit our local thrift store
- Go to a rummage sale
- Check out a couple garage sales
- Go to the batting cages (my company’s softball season is coming up and she’s been playing with us for the last three years, even though you have to be 18 to play – no one has ever questioned it!)
- Chinese dinner out with me, Tony and her step-brother Joe!
My life is rich, if one dinner doesn’t work out as planned – who am I to complain??
See you tomorrow!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANNAH!!
Happy Birthday Hannah! I am an only child (and older than your own mother), and my mother has always been one of my very best friends, so I love to see other mother-daughter relationships that work well.
Biz, the tempura veggies look great. Every recipe that doesn’t meet our expectations is a learning experience that makes us even better cooks, so don’t be too hard on yourself cuz I can tell from the pictures, you are one awesome chef!
dinner looks great anyway 🙂
Happy early birthday Hannah!
