Again another weekend comes to a close and I wish I were already retired. Sadly, I have about 20 years to go! Oh well, the lottery is up to $190 million this week, maybe I should get some lottery tickets!
Saturday I met up with Hannah, my Mom, Hannah’s boyfriend and his Mom for lunch to celebrate Hannah’s 21st birthday. She picked Flat Top Grill in Oak Park. I love that place – so fresh and delicious. Hannah had her eye on a Mango Margarita. She was so cute, she had her student idea out (to get the $1 discount!) and her new driver’s license (yes, she already got her “adult” license the day after her birthday!) in hand.
The server took her drink order, simply asked if she wanted sugar or salt on the rim of her drink, and off she went. She never asked for her i.d.!
The same thing happened to me. I was living in Virginia. My cousin was in a band at the time, and while I could get in the bar under 21, you couldn’t actually drink obviously until you were 21. The weekend after my 21st birthday? No one ever carded me once!
We walked around Oak Park for a while, went into some shops and then it was time to go our separate ways. Hannah and I have had a long standing joke of me touching her boobs inappropriately – its perfectly innocent, and it makes us laugh our asses off. I’ll come up to her and touch her boob and say “that’s such a pretty shirt, what’s this fabric made out of?” So I give you the “reach for boob” hug picture!
And a normal pic, just so people walking by didn’t think I had completely lost it!
I took a different route home because I needed gas and my Gas Buddy app (totally get that if you don’t already have it – it tells you where the cheapest gas is either where you are using the GPS, or entering your zip code). As soon as I made a turn down one road, I saw the signs!!!!!!
Whole Foods Now Open!
This one is ginormous – seriously the biggest Whole Foods I’ve ever been to. They have been talking about it opening for the past couple years. It’s about a 20 minute drive from my house vs. the 45 minutes it would take one way to get to the other closest one.
Now if I had unlimited income, I could shop here every week. It is a Foodie’s paradise. But realistically, the best way to shop here is to go for the sale items on meat and seafood – typically they deeply discount one meat and one seafood a week. And it’s the best place to buy herbs and seasonings. You buy just pennies of what you need, nothing goes bad, and if you try a new herb like tumeric and decide you don’t like it, you aren’t going to have to hang onto a $7 dollar bottle of it.
I of course couldn’t pass up a visit to the cheese market section. Holy moly! I could just set up a cot next to it and wake up to cheese every day.
I tasted and bought a small piece of goat cheese gouda. OMG. I cannot wait to try this one on a panini!
I ended up buying a chuck roast steak – on sale for $3.99 a pound. This was actually one giant steak, but I had them cut it in half length wise. I cooked the first steak for dinner Saturday night – used the leftovers for one of my SIL’s dishes this week, and I froze the other steak for a later time – so about $2.50 per serving – not bad!
I found a recipe for a steak marinade. Unfortunately, I cut and pasted the recipe onto a Word document and printed it out, and for the life of me I can’t figure out where I got it from! Hopefully I’ll find it so I can give credit where credit is due – but this was amazeballs. I only marinated it for one hour, I think longer would be even better.

Not bad grilling considering I was cooking in the dark! I ended up making $40 dollars on my Souper Friday lunch, so I splurged and used some of that money on Boddington’s Beer. Hands down one of my favorite beers (if you can find it on tap – get it!) and a craft beer that Tony will actually drink!
The beef was delicious. Super tender, nice flavor – cannot wait to try this one again!
Since I baked some extra potatoes from our steak night dinner, Tony made me an amazeballs breakfast. Because of the time change, and when I got up (9:30, er 10:30!) it was nearly noon by the time I ate breakfast. Note that Tony cuts and fans the strawberries! Thanks Tony, it was delicious!
I caught up on my THREE American Idol shows I DVR’d. I have to say I am really happy with the Top 10! And I don’t care if Tony tells me the ratings suck, I still love the show.
It was rainy, dreary, foggy all day yesterday. Tony and I went to the store – great shop, only spent $69! Tony would like to show you something though.
He’s modest, so he only showed you half! Ha, I wonder what the people in the store thought of us! Well, we aren’t the type of people to care, so no worries! (but I apologize to my Mom and his parents for our behavior in advance!)
Tis the season for Reuben’s, and especially this time of year, if it’s on a menu, I am going to order it. Even though we were at the Texan, home of the smoked sausage and pulled pork, I got a Reuben. Perfection. Super tender and flavorful corned beef, grilled. Tony and I split the sides.
So it can come as no surprise that I bought a corned beef brisket! This is the simplest way I know how to cook corned beef. First, try to buy one in a brine with the seasoning packet. Put the corned beef, brine and seasoning packet in a Dutch oven. Cover with enough water so it’s 2 inches above the corned beef. Bake at 325 with a tight fitting lid (I put foil between the pot and lid) and cook for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Peel and dice potatoes and carrots, add the veggies to the pot, and cook for 45 more minutes.
The “dip” is 1 tablespoon thousand island dressing mixed with 1 tablespoon yellow mustard. This was delicious!
Question of the Day: Corned beef fan or not? My Mom definitely is not, but every year would make it around St. Patrick’s day for my Dad who loved it.
Alright, off to get my shizz together for the day – make it a great day!
Used this meat marinade today for London Broil, it was fabulous!
Woop! Glad you liked it Kim! 😀
I just can’t get into the corned beef. I want to like it, but something about the seasonings just doesn’t work for me.
I love the birthday pics, you guys are so funny! I definitely like corned beef but have never tried to make it before. Tom won’t eat it so making a big piece isn’t very practical.
I love you and Hannah, you are such pretty lovely people with a lovely face to look at. It makes me smile.
That whole foods store would be paradise for me too 🙂 It’s probably best for my wallet that we don’t have it in Holland 🙂
I don’t eat or like corned beef but my Dad did.
I love to look around Whole Foods too, we call it Whole Paycheck!! Love the boob pic, my family does stuff like that all the time………….love it!
I think this year will be the first year I won’t be making corned beef, we will be meeting our new grandson instead!!! 🙂
So excited for you M.J.! Enjoy your new grandson!
I love Whole Foods but of course I can’t afford to shop there for everything! When they have sales I stock up and there is just something about that store that makes me happy!
Really good eats going on at your house. I can take or leave corned beef- have only made it a couple of times as the family doesn’t get too excited about it.
That’s exactly how I feel about WF – it just makes me happy!
Lol! About you and Hannah and the boob pic!! Hee hee. I sure wish we had a Whole Foods nearby. I could stay in that cheese section also! Shy Tony, ha ha ha!!! You guys are a riot!! I don’t care what people think either, I’m always goofing around 😉 Absolutely love, love corned beef! I kept seeing the reuben sandwich at Arby’s and it looked so good. The hubs went and picked up lunch from there and for fast food I have to say it was pretty good and they did not skimp on the meat, it was a heavy sandwich!! 🙂
I knew you, of all people, would appreciate the humor in this post! 😀
I’m going to have to give that beef marinade a try and be the judge myself! 😉 I didn’t have corned beef and cabbage that often, but made it for the first time last year and it turned out pretty well. My husband likes it, so I’m sure I’ll make it about once a year…
My post tomorrow features the new Whole Food’s! We loved it . . . we found a goat cheese, too, one called Drunken Goat Cheese (soaked in spanish wine) that was awesome. Love the pics of you and Hannah. Too funny! 🙂
You and I should go together sometime! Can’t wait for your post about it. Drunken goat cheese?? Swoon!
I bet if she was there w/out moms they would have checked! Guess the server probably thought ‘if she’s w ‘grown ups’ she’s old enough’
I too LOVE LOVE that store, but don’t go often enought b/c of the price. Ours has this really amazing ‘wall of mushrooms’ that I just can’t get past quickly enough!
I’ve just recently become a fan of the beef, but super picky about it. I used to have to cover it in 1000 island. We’ve got a place that serves it shredded on these super sweet (almost like hawiaan bread) buns and its yummy! I’ve also just recently started liking the saurkraut too.
Cover it in thousand island?? What?! My sister is particular about her meat too – nothing on the bone, too fatty, or too thick. And she doesn’t like it as rare as me – she’s more of a medium well gal, and I swear if I ask her, she still dips her steak into ketchup – ew!
LMAO…seriously??? Hilarious! 😀
This marinade is perfect cuz flank steak is on sale this week! W00t!
Let me know if you try it Jenn – I would suggest marinating it overnight!
y’all crack me up!
You guys are friggin hilarious!! The boob hug and Tony at the store. Lmao! Love it.
Gotta try the steak marinade. That rally does sound good. It just som happens that I have steaks. 🙂
What?? You have steaks on hand! Ha, seriously, still looking for paleo/low carb blogs for you!
OMG Vat….you are HILARIOUS!!!! It was the weekend of rude carrot shots, I posted a couple from a winter farmers market on my Saturday post. Cheers to being childish sometimes!!!!! 🙂
I totally meant to link up to you when I saw your unappropriate carrot shots – I showed Tony the picture and I said “the middle one looks like a person with one arm!” And he looked at it and said “no it’s a man with a big penis!” Ha!
Nice! I’m always in search of a good steak marinade. Thanks!
Haha so I do the inappropriate boob touch to my mom and it freaks her out every time – yet we still get hysterical about it. Looks like you had such a fun time!
Woop – love it Anne Marie – I knew there was a reason I liked you! Glad you and your husband and son enjoyed some nice weather over the weekend!
hahhahahah Tony! Hilarious. I agree WFs rocks. I treat myself to a small treat from there every couple weeks. My favorite is their no sugar added papaya in the bulk bin. I have a serious dried fruit issue. I can eat it until I”m ill. I am book marking this marinade so I can make it for Joshers
I’ll have to look for that nex time E!
Oh man, I haven’t made corned beef (and cabbage!) in years…yours looks so good, I may just have to, this weekend!!!
So nice you got a Whole Foods nearby! That’s a pipe dream in my small town, although we are supposed to be getting a Sprouts this summer, which I hear is similar but on a smaller scale?
Huh, never heard of Sprouts! We have something called The Fresh Market that is similar to Whole Foods, but Whole Foods will still be my first love. 😀
Did you ever see the freeze flash mob at the Austin Whole Foods?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMoile_aX8c
Where’s the cabbage? You have to have potatoes and cabbage with your corned beef. Holy Yum!!!
You know what? While I love sauerkraut, I do not like cabbage – weird! And it wasn’t until I started to eat dinner I thought – I forgot the sauerkraut! No worries, I see reuben omelets in my future and reuben paninis!
Ok, lots of funny business going on in your parts huh? 🙂 How exciting that Whole Foods is open, I wouldn’t shop there a ton but of course those specialty items are awesome!
The fact that you posted the boob shot and that pic of Tony is the exact reason I love you. Will you share your cot with me in the cheese section?
Hells yes I’ll share a cot with you Dana! Love that you get my sense of humor! 😀
I love the cheese section at Whole Foods! And I love you can just buy little chunks of cheese to try it. Yum! Def a corned beef fan 🙂 With sauerkraut!
Jane, it was funny because I wanted to sample my cheese before buying it, and the guy next to me said “you can do that?!” Um, absolutely!

You and Hannah are just like my mom, sis, and I. We do inappropriate boob touching too. Haha. Love it!!!
And that marinade sounds delish! Will have to try it after Meatless March!
Inappropriate boob touchers unite! 😀 Love it!
I LOVE corned beef! We made it a couple weeks ago. It’s just so darn easy.
I never would have guessed in a million years that you would eat corned beef! I am guessing it’s not microbiotic though?! 😀
I’ve been to the new Whole Foods twice already – SO IN LOVE! I can justify it as I plan my meals based on their weekly flyer sales – so, it’s not so scary at check out.
Answer, I love corned beef! Unfortunately, my husband does not!
Do you just get the flyer online?? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Whole Foods flyer before!
