What is Dutch Apple Bread?
Dutch apple bread is a cozy, old-fashioned baked loaf made with apples and a sweet, tender batter. This is quite literally the fluffiest bread batter I’ve ever worked with. It falls in the category of quick breads, which I love because this can be put together, baked and eaten within about two hours. And it uses standard ingredients that should be readily available in most home kitchens. The name can be a bit confusing because Dutch apple bread doesn’t really have a universally agreed upon recipe. Some versions resemble a traditional apple quick bred, while others are closer to an apple cake or loaf with a cinnamon crumb topping. Whatever you call it, it’s delicious!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- apples (my go to apple for baking is Sugar Bee apples)
- butter
- sugar
- eggs
- vanilla extract
- flour (I used all-purpose)
- baking soda, baking powder, salt
- milk (I used unsweetened almond milk)
- walnuts (or nuts of choice)
- brown sugar (for sugared topping)

How to Make Dutch Apple Bread
This is a one bowl apple bread, which I love. While I used my stand mixer, you do not need one. Just make sure your butter is very softened before creaming with the sugar if you are mixing by hand. Whip the butter and sugar. Add the eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients. I decided to shred one apple (don’t squeeze dry) and dice the second one and I love this combination. You get that apple flavor in every bite. Top with walnuts and brown sugar and bake until it reaches between 200-205 degrees, approximately 45 minutes. As oven temps vary, I’d check at 40 minutes.

Dutch Apple Bread
I thrifted a 1966 cookbook called A World of Breads by Dolores Casella. I cannot find anything about this author online, but I adapted her Dutch Apple Bread recipe and this is a show stopper!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter softened
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 2 medium apples, one shredded, one diced
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
Instructions
Cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and beat until creamy. Add dry ingredients, then milk and then slowly mix the apples until the batter is combined. Top with chopped walnuts and brown sugar.
Bake at 350 for 40-55 minutes depending on your oven. Start to check at 40 minutes. Bread is typically done when it between 200-205 degrees Fahrenheit. (Or 93-95 Celsius). Mine overbaked by just a bit, but it was still moist and delicious!

How to Store
Once the bread has completely cooled, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. Store it at room temperature for 2-3 days. Avoid wrapping it when it is still warm because the trapped steam can make the crust soggy. Want to store longer? Store it in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Simply reheat in a microwave for 5-10 seconds once removed from the refrigerator.
