My friend who’s house I went to and cooked on that totally deluxe stove is an awesome decorator. Like, if she ever gives up her day job as an attorney, she should really look into becoming a decorator – she’s got that good of an eye.
Once I told her that I was on my way with the construction on my living room, she immediately asked if she could help me decorate. She said “just tell me your budget and I’ll take it from there!” We left it at that over the weekend, but yesterday she texted me and said “I kind of need to know what style I am working with so that I can start getting ideas.” Huh. I’ve told you before my decorating style is “early miscellaneous.” We have a purchased entertainment center from Ikea, our dining room set is our most expensive piece of furniture that cost $1500 several years ago, and well, my sectional couch with a queen size bed in it? Bought at a garage sale for $100 because the husband wasn’t informed of the purchase by his wife and it literally took up half of their basement.
So I jumped on Pinterest. I knew I didn’t want anything modern. Our house is a 1922 cottage, so that would be completely wrong. So I stumbled upon this:
Love. I love the light grey hardwood floors and just the comfy cozy feel of this room. So my friend replied back: “oh, you like the airy, driftwood, rustic style!” Um, okay? What do you guys think of that living room?
After Day 2 of construction all the rotten rafters have been removed and completely replaced. I cannot tell you how solid the front of the house feels right now. And I have two new electrical outlets!
I think windows are going in today, then I have Orkin coming to treat the wood before the drywall and insulation gets installed. That subfloor that Hannah is standing on is also going to be replaced. Goodbye ugly carpet, hello hardwood floors!
I was back on track with my eating yesterday – eating within 30 minutes of getting up. I was telling my sister that what is hard about that is we are both really slow eaters – like it could take us 30 – 40 minutes to finish a meal. I ended up making what I like to call breakfast pizza sammies – I toasted an Ezekiel english muffin, then put a tablespoon of pizza sauce on each one, then a slice of pepperoni, then scrambled egg whites with spinach on top, topped it with some mozzarella cheese and put it under the broiler until nice and bubbly, then topped it with some fresh basil from the farmers market. This was really very good – 354 calories, 8 fat, 47 carbs, 7 fiber and 27 protein.
My Meal #2 was a Chobani flip. I don’t think I’ve bought them before but when Chobani is 10/$10 I stock up!
After the first bite I wasn’t sure I could go on because it was SO sweet. I am so used to my plain Chobani. But I gave it a try, and well, I ate the whole thing. I loved the bits of chocolate and coconut in it. And it’s a perfect mini meal at 240 calories and 12 grams of protein.
Another gorgeous day in our neighborhood even though it’s going to be in the high 80s next week. I’ve enjoyed this little taste of autumnal weather. It was 68 degrees with puffy clouds again. Just so you know – during the first two miles I have to cross a busy street – but look at how speedy I was on my walk on the last mile!
I again took no insulin with the flip, and you’ll see my blood sugar dropped 170 points again at lunch. Today I am going to take less insulin at Meal #1 and see how that works out. Lunch was leftover buffalo chicken chili over 1/2 cup whole wheat pasta with some chopped red cabbage on top – it was the last of the cabbage and I didn’t want to throw it out.
I had Day 2 of my strength training and I have to say I am really getting into it. My new favorite machine? The Smith Machine. It is great for working by yourself because if you can’t handle something, you just walk away, the bar never moves forward or backwards. So my routine was below, doing 1 minute of intense cardio in between each set – this took me just under 40 minutes to complete – I was spent by the end!
My gym didn’t have a seated calf raise machine, so I just upped the pounds on the standing calf raise and did that twice. My 1 minute of cardio in between each set included box jumps, mountain climbers, jumping rope, step ups on the bench, and plank holds. I literally just got tired reading that!
With Hannah not liking meat, and Jacob and I love meat, it’s sometimes hard to come up with a meal that satisfies all of our tastes. But when I saw Jessica from How Sweet Eats made a skillet summer gnocchi, I knew it would be a winner. Potato gnocchi with sauteed mushrooms, corn and a quick cheese sauce of heavy cream and Parmesan cheese – how could you go wrong with that? I did end up making this 6 servings, reducing the oil and butter to 1 teaspoon each, adding in Italian sausage to make it more of a meal for Jacob and I and well, Hannah picked out the sausage. My 1/6 serving came in at 404 calories, 22 fat, 32 carbs, 8 fiber and 20 protein. Pure summer comfort food in a bowl!
I am just about to take out my breakfast muffins out of the oven – I rolled out sourdough bread for the base and put that in my muffin tin then put ham, spinach, egg whites and a bit of cheese and baked it for 20 minutes. If you want to check it out, it should be in Instagram now – are you following me? What, you aren’t? You don’t have Instagram? Just put the app on your phone and follow me: my bizzy kitchen!
Tonight is running club – I think 2 minutes walking and 6 minutes running – looking forward to it! I have watermelon and a protein bar for my pre-workout snack so I should be good to go.
Make it a great day!
I like the gray tones in the living room. It looks very calming.
I like Houzz.com for decorating ideas, too.
Thanks for the link – always looking for new places for ideas – thanks Katherine 😀
I am not a huge fan of the light fixture, but everything else in the room? LOVE.
The lighting has always been an issue in the living room – I’ve only had floor lamps and it’s never as bright as I would like it. We’ll see what my friend comes up with 😀
I also like that living room, it’s peaceful and makes me think of a beach house too.
Thanks Fran! We’ll see how it comes out 😀
That is a knock out room. I have linen slipcovers and love them because with dogs they are so easy to wash. I’m not sure I would want all the pillows, though because I am a neat freak and would always have to be fluffing them. Same goes for dusting that light. Love the look and the feel though and think it says, You!
I was thinking of covers too Abbe – as much as we don’t like the dogs on the couches, as soon as we leave that’s the first place they go!
Early miscellaneous-I love it! I call mine modge podge…anything goes, not necessarily together but it goes!
Perhaps I meant hodgepodge, but really I did modge podge years ago, so maybe I did mean it, ha!
I think that room is stunning. I would love to have that in my home. It is so sophisticated but still super comfortable looking. A perfect spot for a great book.
A. I love that living room. I’m sure she’ll adding lots of great textures, so you’ll feel cozy and comfy in your rustic driftwood room 🙂
B. I worry about Hannah’s bare feet on the floor…be careful!!
C. That gnocchi meal looks amazing. I’m going to have to copy that one!
I think if you love that living room, that is all that matters. Everyone’s style is so different.
I am still figuring out my style, which is pretty much eclectic vintage and classic, but not retro or modern, with a touch of bohemian LOL!
I love the touch of bohemian Lori!
Love the living room too. My advice is to look for pieces of furniture from FB groups, craigslist, etc. You want to get pieces that will last you, look for solid wood made in the USA. We bought 2 ethan allen dressers for 40.00 at a yard sale. We use one as a console and another as a freestanding pieces, against a wall. Gives us good storage too. Also, look at the clearance section of Target, you can get some great inexpensive accent pieces. Same with Home Goods and Ross, and TJ Maxx. I love various mismatched chairs, I found 2 on a FB group, both ethan allen and the woman had them refinished and reupulstered. I’ll never get rid of them, I love them so much. We currently have a big dresser downstairs that J is going to paint, we’ll have a Flat screen TV mounted above it. I’m going to keep our dogs food in our of the drawers too. Oh, I also love indoor/outdoor rugs. So easy to clean and right now on clearance at Target.
Back to food” Was yesterday a high carb day?
Love all your ideas Randi! I know my friend is going to help me get the most with my money 😀
Monday Wednesday and Fridays are low carb, Tuesday Thursday and Saturdays are high carb and Sunday is the free day.
But my range of low carb to high carb isn’t as low as the program wants – my diabetes dietitian recommends no less than 125 carbs a day, even for diabetics. So my low carb days are between 100-125 and high carb is 175-200. 😀
LOVE the living room, the floors are gorgeous!!!
Thanks Jen!
Love the living room colors. We are going with grey in our new house, love the floor but need to get Charlie on board.
Glad everything is going smoother with the house!
Thanks Laura! Well after I show Charlie mine maybe he’ll reconsider!
I love that living room…. something I would pick myself. I hope she comes up with something great for you!
That Chobani you bought is one I really like – but I agree it’s so sweet, I eat it as a dessert.
Thanks Helen – and today I had the banana flip with almonds and chocolate and that one was very tasty! Not as sweet to me.
Oooh I LOVE the living room! I usually like dark woods–especially cherry–but I am LOVING that light colored floor. Very airy and calming.
I think that because the room is so open and big if I went darker it would close it in? Who am I to say though!
Smitten Kitchen’s mushroom bourguignon is great – it’s very hearty and eats like a rich, meaty stew, with no meat! And it’s cheap to make and makes great leftovers.

Ive had this pinned for so long. I totally want to make it.
Just looked at that recipe Kris and Randi – and that totally is going on the top of the list for recipes to make – Hannah and Jacob would both love it!
I love the colors of that room – I’d like to do my floors in grey tones similar to what is in that picture. The furniture looks comfy! So nice to have help with decorating – doing an entire room is a big challenge.
Good luck with running club tonight!
Thanks Shelley – it’s funny because as I was running solo at my club I kept thinking of you and all your running buddies! Oh well 🙁
I am so glad everything is running so much more smoothly with this contractor!
OMG, me too Carrie! What a difference professionals make! And as they went they kept pointing out things out that they were going to include in the original bid, like electrical outlets, a new vent system so moisture doesn’t accumulate in the attic – it’s so nice to feel like I am actually being taken care of instead of being taken advantage of!
If you decorate your living room that way don’t be surprised if you come home and find me curled up on the couch with my kindle and coffee. I would never want to leave. Remind your friend that you can re-purpose a lot of things from thrift stores etc. It amazes me what can be done to make things look new again. Of course a few new pieces are great to throw in too. Dinner looks tasty and sounds like it would be a quick after work meal.
Ha, that made me spit out my coffee Kym! I come home and you’d be like “hey Biz, just checking out the new furniture!” You know you are always welcome if you make it up to my neck of the woods 😀
And yes, that dish took less than 15 minutes to put together – nice!
That room is beautiful and perfect for you
So happy you approve! 😀
That Living room looks so relaxing its your own beach home, Love the look! Good find!
Thanks Lisa! I found that on Pinterest, so we’ll see how close I get to it in real life 😀
I LOVE the living room! Makes me want to sit down and just admire how beautiful it is or read a book…
The gnocchi sound great, too! Your IG pic made me hungry!
Thanks Andrea! So glad you had such a nice time visiting your parents 😀
LOVE that living room!!!! Have a great day 🙂
Thanks Lynne! I am loving it too – now let’s see if I can put something similar together on a budget! 😀
I love that furniture B! It’s like being on vacation at a beach house ??
I know, right? I like that it’s comfy cozy – like pajamas – maybe that’s my style?! If I go into a store I’ll ask “do you have any furniture that feels like your favorite pair of pajamas?! Thanks!”
