I am not going to lie. I LOVE eating out. Trying new foods, new wines, new places. If we won the lottery I wouldn’t mind eating out every Friday and Saturday night. But, I have to be realistic. Eating out right now is just now in our budget, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make take out food just as good, if not better, than spending the money on picking it up at your local take out place.
Tony and I both love the salad dressing that comes on the salad at Benihana. When the kids were little we used to take them to Benihana, they loved the show the cooks put on, but after spending so much money, we realized they both only liked the shrimp dish. Neither one ate the soup, salad, veggies, etc. So we quickly made the decision after that to make the kids shrimp at home and skip all the sides that they didn’t like. But Tony and I love that simple salad. I guessed that it had radishes in it, but Tony found a copycat recipe that I followed to the T, but it was missing something. It didn’t taste quite right – Tony suggested adding in carrots, and that did the trick.
Benihana Salad Dressing
- 1/2 cup peanut oil
- 1/3 cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
- 2 tablespoons minced celery
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 4 teaspoons soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 carrots, chopped
Throw everything into the food processor and pulse. It will be slightly chunky but that’s okay. It’s tangy, surprisingly light, and you only need a little bit to coat the salad. Sorry I don’t have a better picture, but it was already dark and this was the one and only picture of the salad.
But the star of the show was the potstickers! I adapted Damn Delicious’s recipe – I left out the onions, obviously, used button mushrooms instead of shitake mushrooms, and sadly left out the sriracha so Tony would like them. I also added a teaspoon of fish sauce. If you haven’t tried it yet, do it – I was afraid of it for the longest time – I don’t like fish so why the hell would I put fish sauce on my food! But it’s a salty umami flavor that really adds a lot to a dish.

That picture was taken in my fluorescent kitchen. Yesterday I was able to take some pics in natural light – much better! I love the crispiness of the bottom of the wonton, but the top is still chewy. I ended up adding sriracha to this dipping sauce and I got the kick of heat that I thought was missing in the actual wonton.
Tony gave this dinner two big thumbs up, and that makes me happy. He normally doesn’t like most of the food that I make, so to make him happy with my food is just icing on the cake.
I feel that my knee is back to 100%, and that means back to the gym. September was kind of a blur exercise wise, and I want to get back on track. I don’t want to fall into the “it’s the holidays!” trap and just eat like shit for three months. I haven’t weighed in for a while, so it was time to suck it up and see where I am at.
Well, I have to say I thought that number was going to be a lot worse! But I am going to take a positive spin on it – I am only 12.6 pounds away from the 150s!
Alright, time to get this show on the road – make it a great day!
You blow me away with all you accomplish. Working full time, blogging, exercising and managing to cook most nights. You wear me out just reading!
Ooh, those potstickers! Chinese is one of those foods I miss doing paleo – I avoid soy as much as possible whether I am doing paleo or not, but once in awhile I just have to get broccoli beef or something with that salty good sauce!
I’m so impressed by the potstickers! I’ve never attempted to make them myself. Think you just gave me the courage.
I love potstickers and you make making them look so easy!
Looks delicious! Thought I was the only one with a partner that doesn’t like a lot of food I make, glad I’m not the only one 🙂
Nope, I’d say that 80% of the stuff I make Tony doesn’t like. Which is kind of funny because we have neighbors who went to London a few years ago, and knowing that chicken tikka masala is popular in London, I had some leftover and brought some over for them to try.
They oohed and aaahhed over the flavor and my neighbor looked at Tony and said “how can you not eat this delicious food?!”
Please send potstickers!!!!! That is all….. 🙂
If I could Roz, I would! Give an extra hug to your Momma from me the next time you see her. 😀
Oh my goodness those look to die for! So glad Tony liked as well 🙂 I’m pretty sure Mike would eat potstickers every single night if I let him!
Courtney, these are just as good as any I’ve had in a Chinese restaurant. Sadly, that isn’t really saying much because the Chinese food around here is kind of greasy and tastes like ass.
Have you been to Gourmet House on Algonquin Road? That’s our favorite place – cheap and delicious!
Yum – I love the salad dressing they make at places like Benihana’s! I’ve never made potstickers but your recipe looks really good!!
Glad your knee is feeling better.
It would be a fun weekend dinner with your boys – the more hands you have to roll up the potstickers, the quicker it goes – they freeze well too!
We are so no alike. lol. The only thing I DON’T like at Benihana is the salad dressing!! Hahaha.
What??!! Ha – that’s too funny! Hope you got some takers on your deluxe bike that’s for sale!
Your potstickers look yummy. Glad Tony liked them. Don’t be surprised if he asked for them again. JP is wanting them….(so am I) so that will be on the menu for this week again. I do have the wonton wrappers in the frig. So will try them this time.
Glad to hear your knee is better. Sure puts a kink in weight loss when you can’t exercise. Then that meanie scale keeps registering high numbers….sheeesh…can be a losing battle at times. Have a great day.
Love that JP loves them Louise! My knee feels great. This morning before work I did Classical Stretch – I need to do that on a daily basis because I feel so much better when I am done, it’s only 30 minutes and it’s a great way to start the day. 😀
The pot stickers sound really yummy but I have never liked them because of the chewy factor. Do you think I would ruin them if a crisped them up on all sides? The dressing looks like the one at our favorite take out place. I can’t wait to try it this week.
So happy the knee is doing better.
It wouldn’t ruin it at all – I like the combo of the crunchy/chewy. In fact, with the ones I froze, I was going to try to drop the whole thing in the deep fryer and see how that works out. If you did the pan fry, you’d just have to keep turning the potstickers to brown all the sides – like adding a few more minutes of cooking time?
WOW! Homemade potstickers — these look amazing!! Love them. 🙂
Thanks Sara!
Those potstickers look awesome! My healthy eating challenge is over and it didn’t work very well for me so now I’m trying a gluten-free challenge for the month of October. I think I’ll make meatballs out of the pork filling and put them in some soup. Glad your knee is feeing better! Have a great day! 🙂
That is such an awesome idea about the meatballs Christine, because I made a roasted red pepper/tomato soup and I was thinking of bulking it up to make it more filling for lunch. So with the last of the pork potsticker filling I made 8 mini meatballs to add to it for lunch today – I’ll let you know how it turns out. Hugs!
The holidays can be killer!
But I remind myself:
When I lost the first baby weight back in 2007/2008, I started in early November and finished in February. So – go me! 25 lbs gone over the holidays!
Last year was a rough, stressful, emotional year. I started working on my weight on December 27.
I had a hiccup this past summer due to more stress and more layoffs at work.
BUT STILL, compared to this time last year, I am down 17 lbs. Not as far down as I’d like but HEY, better than no change at all.
I think I find that maybe trying to lose weight over the holidays is a GOOD thing. It’s easier if I just convince myself to say “no” to the wine, the cookies, the fatty food. If I allow a little, then it can morph into a lot.
Anyway, the plan I’m on now, I get a “cheat day” on Sunday. It’s a challenge. I find that every week, there is at least one or two days of temptation. A party here, a little get-together with wine there. I don’t always resist but I’m trying very hard to stay on the straight and narrow. And since we do Thanksgiving at our house (usually), I am keeping it simple with a roast turkey breast and vegetables and ONE “bad” food (mashed potatoes with a ton of butter, cream cheese, and sour cream).
No pile of pies, sweet potatoes, stuffing, rolls (the carbs are my downfall!)
The carbs are the best though, aren’t they??!! 😀 I think you are doing great with work/food planning/food prep AND two small children. I don’t think I could do it Marcia!
That salad dressing looks good, as do the pot stickers! YUM.
You need a light box – think of it as an investment for recipe contests you can enter and possibly win! 🙂
That’s a great idea Shelley – thanks! 😀
I love potstickers more than anything in the world! I’m so jealous of your dinner. And you’re right about the winter months and the shitty photos–here they come!
Yep, it’s already nearly dark by the time I even start making dinner – waaahhh!!
What a delicious dinner! My SIL loves that kind of salad dressing- I’ll send her the recipe. Your openness about your weight is amazing and inspiring <3
Aw, thanks Erica! I appreciate it! 😀
