I was so glad to go to the parent orientation at Hannah’s school. It also reminded me that I don’t miss the commute to get downtown! I took the 6:58 a.m. train yesterday and it got me downtown by 8:05. I am about 55 miles NW of the city, and I did that commute for about six months before finding a job in the suburbs.
They had a welcome breakfast at 8:30 – just coffee, donuts, bagels, etc. The first hour was with both students and parents, then the students went on a tour and the parents stayed in Ganz Hall, which is beautiful. Stained glass windows and dark wood everywhere.
One of the Ph.D. counselors talked to the parents about how to handle the transition of your child going to college. She asked what we were feeling. Some parents said “excited!” Others said “overwhelmed.” The one parent said “Jealous!” The counselor stopped for a second and said something like “that’s a valid feeling, can you tell me a little bit more about it?”
Not kidding. The woman said: “I am jealous of the ocean views my daughter has from her dorm room.” Um, pretty sure she is referring to Lake Michigan, while it looks big, it certainly is not the ocean! I am just thankful her daughter is going to college though!
Here are some tips they gave us to manage this change in our lives:
- Pay attention to staying healthy
- acknowledge the milestone
- try to find an outlet for yourself, like take a pottery class or take up yoga
- seek support from others
I guess its harder for parents who have freshman, but Hannah is going in as a junior transfer student, and obviously moved out a couple months ago. I think I am okay with managing this transition in my life!
We started in the old part of the building that faces Michigan avenue. Look at the views from some of the study rooms!
Ha – I just noticed the Lollapalooza sign to the right! Her tuition includes a U-Pass which gives her access to all the public transportation. She takes the orange like to school, and it drops her off right by the school. It’s not too far from the Sears Tower (sorry, I will always call it that!) too.
After the morning sessions, the parents and students met up in the cafeteria in the new Wabash building. This one is really nice. It has a new cafeteria, one whole floor has a top of the line fitness center and there are about 17 floors of dorm rooms.
I ended up having a roast beef sandwich and an apple. They had philly cheese steaks, a pasta station and pork loin with mashed potatoes.
We met with her counselor just before we left to make sure we had everything done, which we do. Classes start August 24 already! On the way, I saw this sign on the wall, and I love the quote:
I seriously need to get my act back together in the weight loss front. I was reading a book about weight training on the L yesterday, which I will talk about tomorrow, but I’ve come to the realization that I have to go back to counting calories and paying attention to what I eat. I stepped on the scale today, and it was not pretty – so its time to get back into shape!
We went our separate ways and I walked the 1.5 miles back to the train station. I passed by the Art Institute.
True story. My freshman year of college I went to Southern Illinois – I had a field hockey scholarship, but they dropped the program after my freshman year. So my twin sister and I went to our local community college. One of the classes we took was called “fashion merchandising” and we went to the art institute for an all day field trip.
Except my sister and I decided it would be a better use of our time if we went to Bennigan’s for lunch and just went home afterwards!
My Mom told me that Target had opened in the old Carson Pierre Scott building – I love that they didn’t change the outside look at all, but it’s weird to walk in and it looks like any other Target!
I got home about 4:00 and had time to go get my eye brows threaded (ouch!) and go to the grocery store for a few things, like fruit and veggies! I ended up making an alfredo for one:
Alfredo Sauce (one serving: 142 calories, 5 fat, 13 carbs, .2 fiber and 6.7 protein)
- 1/2 cup of fat free half and half
- 1 pat of butter
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 tablespoon fresh shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1/3 to 1/2 cup pasta water
- salt, pepper, crushed red pepper to taste
Melt the butter in a pan. Add the flour and make a paste. Gradually add the half and half until its thick. Spoon in just enough pasta water to get it to the right consistency to coat the pasta – I ended up using the 1/2 cup. Remove from heat and add in cheese, salt, pepper and crushed red pepper.
I cooked the broccoli in the microwave on fresh vegetable setting, and while my pasta cooked, I just Pam fried up some shrimp. Then I just tossed everything together to coat the pasta. So good!
So it’s August 1st. I reset my Zero scale and will show my results at the end of the month. It’s time to put up or shut up. I’ll write my monthly goals in tomorrows post.
What are your goals for August? Make it a great day!
Not to be rude, but REALLY? The gave y’all a “pep talk” on eating healthy and finding a hobby because your kid left home? I am so glad you are you Biz.
But, excuse me while I laugh my behind off. I have seen some over the top hand holding of people in our new “politically correct, warm fuzzy, it’s a better world for it” kind of world – but c’mon. Do grown men and women REALLY need “helpful” advice on what to do with themselves now that their kids are adults? What in the world did we do with ourselves before they came along?
I make no apologies – because that is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. [I am still giggling] If they had done that with any of our older kids or do it with Wallene – I will excuse myself and go have a cup of coffee.
And I think we all had our “Bennigans” field trip in college. I think ours was called “Crazy Horse” tho’. Local DC dive. Good burgers and much more interesting than going downtown to see some reaaaaaaaaaallly bad theater, all in Spanish. Yep. Time better spent.
The Bennigans lunch story is awesome. I cannot imagine going to school on such a nice looking campus, my small town school sure looked nothing like that. My goals for August are to try to worry less and be more positive.
That would be a weird Target! I can’t wait to go visit the “ocean” on our trip, we leave tomorrow! Yikes! One of my kids favorite things is just to stop by the lakes and play on the rocks. We went up to Duluth and up along the north shore last year and they had a blast. I think next year we’ll do that again but keep going farther North. So we’ve done Lake Superior, we’ve never been to the other lakes.
Did you email me this week? I’ve been lost in a sea of emails and might have missed it.
I loved hearing about orientation with Hannah. I remember when we took our daughter off–we felt more like the jealous lady because everything looked sooo fun, her room was cute, and her classes sounded great. We wanted to ditch 20 years and go back to college ourselves!
Liked the quote too, I like to think of myself as a “life long learner.” I’ll never be so old that I don’t love learning new things.
Goals for August? Hmm. To start eliminating the walking bits in my runs. And to lose 7 more pounds. Only 18 pounds from goal weight as of today!!!
I went to school in Champaign and was always so jealous of everyone that went to school in a big city. I’m such a city girl, live downtown now and love it. What a fantastic dorm room view!
What a nice day for you and Hannah. It looks like a beautiful campus. I cracked up reading about the lady who was jealous of her daughter’s ocean views. Don’t you wonder how some people get around every day?!
My only August goal is to get back on track with marathon training. The Achilles injury threw me off for the past couple of weeks, but I’m ready to rock again. November will be here before I know it.
Good luck with your August goal. You can do it Biz!
She’s going to have a blast…if I had to do it over again, I’d go to college in Chicago! So many experiences and great educations!
how exciting! what a big day for you guys. sometimes i wish i was back in college, that was a good time 🙂 i like that quote too, so true, we never stop learning. glad to see you’re doing well biz!
How fun! To be in college again! I will say that I wish I hadn’t gone to UNLV. This will be such a more fun college experience for her.
Love the look of that Target!! 🙂
We have a friend that lives in one of those high rise condos right downtown. He is scary high up and has views of the lake (errr…. the ocean). I don’t think I could deal living that high.
I’ll be writing about my goals for August today.
Glad you were able to go to Hannah’s orientation with her and see her school and all that jazz, even if she is a junior, not a freshman!
I haven’t set monthly goals all year, but I should get back to that. Right now, my goal is to exercise every day, at least until the 17th, when the sailor has an all-day work event at a waterpark. I don’t love bathing suits by any means, but I figure if I’ve been good and moved a lot, it won’t be as bad. 🙂 I also want to start thinking up some good healthy meals that are friendly to both of our eating habits, but luckily he eats everything (even veggie hot dogs, haha!)
You totally have a bathing suit body Errign! And hooray for having a boyfriend that likes just about everything!
That ocean view comment had me rolling that is too funny! I agree, thankfully the daughter is going to college 😉 Glad you had a good day with Hannah. The outside of that Target store is beautiful! Goals for August…do laps in the pool every day possible 😀
Great orientation. Sounds like Hannah will have a great environment to learn in. I’m happy for her!!! Have a great Wed.
Kim – I have two cats, use Petco’s scoopable litter and have no dust! You buy the first pail filled, and then you can fill it up again in the store at less $$.
Thanks Momma!
Thank you soooo much! Now I have to find a Petco. I have tried all kinds of scoopable litter but they have all had dust. I’m looking forward to trying this one out.
That alfredo sauce looks awesome.
My goals for August. I’d like to say lose 20 lbs. But I’ll aim for 5 lbs. I’ve lost 20 lbs so far, but that just leaves me right at where I was when I gave BIRTH to my first son. Which is kind of depressing. But I did end up 15-20 lbs heavier the second time around.
The problem is that I’m starving all the time.
Hang in there Marcia! You have a lot on your plate with your new baby – no worries!
Sounds like a cool orientation… I don’t remember what mine was like. My August goal – eat when hungry, not when bored 😉 Good luck with yours!
Wow, that’s a good one Maggie! 😀
That’s pretty neat that they have a parent orientation. I’ve never heard of that before! My goal for August is to take my multi-vitamin every day. I know it’s a silly goal but it’s something I need to get back on track with!
What a nice orientation! I went to school 8 hours from home-i bet that was toughhhh on my mom! Good luck with the august goal! I want to get back into teaching step on the regular
My goals for August: Follow Biz… cook her yummy recipes, and get into better shape.
Get my spare bedroom cleaned and organized to put in a bow flex. If anyone has any good kitty litter ideas to share they would be appreciated. (The dust goes everywhere)
Clean out the clutter.
Ha – you are too cute Kym! 😀
That pasta looks delicious! So happy for you and your daughter!
