I had a date with my Mom tonight. We saw Julie & Julia at the high end movie theater that my step-son Joe works at. For $44 you got the ticket, two drink coupons, two course dinner, cooking demonstration and a Julie & Julia apron! Good deal right?!
Seriously, how can beat sitting in the most comfortable chair, and then pressing a button when you need something! Blanket, no problem! Glass of chardonnay, no problem! My Mom enjoyed the whole experience!
Just so happened Joe was working tonight and he escorted me to the lounge while I waited for my Mom. I was happily presented with these two tickets:
Then my Mom came – she chose her go to wine: pinot grigio!
Did I mention the seats? Lord have mercy!
The chef for the theater gave us a cooking demonstration – he made chocolate truffles and chilled cucumber soup. We were served both complimentary!
The soup was really good – I didn’t try any of the truffles though, but brought them home for Tony and Hannah to try – I guess the truffles were extremely rich! The nice part is that they handed out recipe cards for both – I’ll post them later when I try them at home.
It was funny because the chef held up an English cucumber and asked the audience “does anyone know what this is?” I said “its an English cucumber!” He said the previous two showings no one knew what it was!!
We had our choice of two courses. This is what I chose:
While I am not huge into tomatoes, I chose the rice balls – the outside was nice, but then the inside was ALL tomato, and I just put that to the side. The quiche was delicious though! We ate our dinner through the movie so no pics – too dark anyway!
Spoiler alert – I am going to talk about the movie!
I really enjoyed this movie! Not because I learned more about Julia Child than I knew (which was cool) but because I could totally relate to Julie. I could seriously work a 9 hour day and not wait to step into the house and put dinner together. I can stand in front of the copier and think “I have blueberries I need to do something with” and daydream about making muffins when I get home. And I am not a good cook which is the funny part!
But the best thing is that my family understands that this is what makes me happy and this blog makes me happy and they love me enough to let me be selfish with my cooking and blogging. I love you!
Joe made the night though! While I was waiting for my Mom, I found out that the aprons they promoted in the package were all gone, so all we were going to get was the movie poster. I broke the news to my Mom when she sat down. When we were in the theater, my Mom mentioned to Joe that she was bummed about not getting the apron. Half way through the movie, Joe texted me and said “go to your car before Nana leaves.” I texted back okay, not even thinking.
It wasn’t until we were walking to my car when it dawned on me. When I opened my car, on the seat were two aprons! The look on my Mom’s face was priceless – that made the night perfect. THANKS JOE – I LOVE YOU!
So thanks to my family for letting me do what I do, and thank you to the readers who read my words – it means a lot!
You know the drill, off to snuggle with Tony before bedtime. See you tomorrow – hopefully for pizza party Friday! 😀
I wish we had fancy movie theatres around here for great evenings like that. Maybe we do, and I just don’t know about them? Sounds like you had a wonderful night with your mom 🙂
wow what a great idea for a movie theatre! I’v never been to such a place! Wine, cooking class and a great movie/comfy chair!? Sign me up!
Google Gold Class Cinemas and see if one is near you – such a great experience!
Where is this theater? It sounds awesome.. is it a chain?
Awww, what a fun night!!! I’ll have to check out that movie theatre – it’s in Chicago huh? What a great deal!
I also LOVED J & J. Meryl Streep was FANTASTIC was she not!??!?
The theater is actually at The Arboretum, a mall in South Barrington – totally worth the $$!
Just bought the book! Will have to see the movie.
Love Julia – have alot of her recipes/book.
What a great night – and Joe pulled it off. So like him.
How fun! Love that Joe snuck you and your mom the aprons – he is so sweet and they are really cute! That theater takes movies to a whole ‘nother level – one that I could get used to rather fast!
beginning, not begging. haha whoops
Wow, how fun is that! I totally forgot that you were going with your mom and I went with Johnny’s SIL last weekend.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Julia Child half of the movie – I’d give it a 10/10. The Julie Powell half of the movie irritated me a bit. I didn’t like that she put Paypal on her page and also that it seemed she kind of was just looking for ANY blog to start, it didn’t matter what kind in the begging. I agree – I related to her love of it, her sharing of it, the love of the blog, etc. It seemed she just got sucked way too deep into it, though. I can’t imagine my blog ever getting in b/w me and Johnny’s relationship and also she seemed a TAD cheesily obsessed with Julia Child. For those reasons, I’d think I’d give the Julie Powell half of the movie a 7/10. Otherwise, it was such a fun watch and really cool that somebody even made a movie about food bloggers!!! 🙂
That whole experience is so cool! I love that it’s the whole shebang with dinner and a movie (and vino!!). Your mom looks great!
what a fun night! that’s so cool that you got to have dinner + wine + cooking demonstration with the movie!
I need a theater like that around me.
I agree, I related to Julie which is why I loved her role so much more then that oof Julia Child.
Also that apron shows off Hannah’s cute little figure perfectly!
Sounds you had such a fun night! I would like to see that movie, but gotta get a girlfriend to go with me because B won’t!
That is so neat!!! I’ve always wanted to start a business where you watch shows like Top Chef or Hell’s Kitchen and get to taste all the foods that they make…but this is sort of like my idea! forty four dollars is SO worth it too. So cool.
how fun! what a wonderful experience! i need to find me one of those theaters 🙂
I saw that movie on Wednesday with my hubby. I really enjoyed it.
But the experience that you had was wonderful! How special to share it with your mother. She looks so sweet.
It sounds like you had a great time. I will have to see what I can do about taking my wife to one of the high end theaters some time. I’ll have to first find one, but it might be a good time on an out of town trip.
The theater looks and sounds truly amazing! And how great that you got to see the movie and have this experience with your Mom. And what a nice ending Joe was able to provide! Sounds like the perfect evening…
And I so agree, our families who support our cooking experiments and our blogging deserve a HUGE thank you! 🙂
