My friend and registered dietician Nicole pointed out that February is National Heart Month and will be teaming up with some other bloggers who have the chops and credientials to post about heart healthy food and recipes this month. Um, turns out it takes a lot of schooling to be a registered dietician!
So for those of you who may need ideas on how to incorporate more heart healthy things in your diet, here are a few tips:
- Try fat free milk over whole milk
- Instead of eggs, try egg whites mixed with egg beaters
- instead of fried tortilla chips, try baked chips
- instead of regular potato chips, try fat free pretzels
- instead of Devil’s food cake, try angel food cake
Guess where I got that information? For the online front page of the Chicago Tribune! I guess I didn’t realize fat free milk would be less calories and fat than whole milk. Um, thanks for those tips?
But you should check out Nicole’s blog because she does have the science behind the nutrition – and she like spicy shit and buffalo anything just as much as me. š
I still haven’t figured out the points of the blueberry hand pies from the night before last. For two reasons – if they turn out to be a lot of points I don’t want to know, and if they are lower in points than I thought, I might make them too often!
But I did take about 1/3 cup of the blueberry mixture (that was mixed with maybe 1/2 teaspoon of sugar) and sauteed the blueberries and apples for my parfait:
- 6 oz. greek yogurt (2)
- 1/2 large apple, chopped (0)
- 1/3 cup blueberries with 1/2 tsp. sugar (0)
- 1/3 cup granola (5)
This was delicious – the tang of the yogurt, the sauteed fruit and then the crunch of the granola – delicious and for only 7 points is wonderful.
Hannah is busy with school and work Monday through Wednesday, leaving Thursday’s wide open. She met me for lunch and we ended up going to Nozumi. I’ve probably been there at least 6 times now and the food is always so good.
They have $4 rolls during lunch hours. We got the cucumber and avocado and tempura shrimp rolls for an appetizer.
I got the spicy chicken yakisoba noodle dish – loaded with veggies – my guess is all together lunch was about 14 points. Sound right?
I wasn’t too hungry by the time dinner rolled around, so I just made a quick bolognese and some penne pasta – dinner was ready in 25 minutes š My plate is about 10 points.
Yesterday at work one of my co-workers was on a local t.v. show and my new (young – he’s 26!) boss sent a link from youtube when he was in a local bar commercial during law school – singing no less!
I then of course had to show him my Oprah appearance, circa 1991 – maybe some of my new readers haven’t seen it before. I am on the left and my twin sister is on the right.

But you know what I realized after watching this again? Hannah is now only 3 years younger than I was in that video – how did I get so old?
So we are all set for Tony’s out patient surgery for the wound vac, it came directly to us and we have to bring it with us on Monday. Um, we are just a bit concerned about the size! I couldn’t figure out how to remove the red eye, so I made the picture black and white. š
I have my quarterly diabetes doctor appointment today. I cancelled my one in December when Tony was in the hospital – I haven’t seen him since August – bad diabetic!
Off to make some coffee and get a move on – make it a great day!
That is so cool you were on TV! I am kind of afraid to know what is actually in that box!!
I am cracking up over those tips. Too funny.
That parfait looks amazing and I actually have everything to make it. This may be our breakfast for tomorrow!
Love Tony’s face in that picture. That box is huge. Intense.
I wore red to work yesterday in honor of women’s heart health. Heart disease runs on my mother’s side so it’s something that I feel it’s important to make people aware of.
You are Tony are too funny! Yep, there are many times when I realize that Little Helen has reached the age where…
For example, she is now the age I was when I married Mr. Helen. So I haven’t given up hope that she might get married too one day lol!
Fat free milk has less fat than whole fat milk! No s**t! Can’t believe that appeared in a mainstream publication like the Chicago Tribune.
Hee hee, I remember that video. š
Seems like Tony know how to find humor in whatever situation. I think he’ll be just fine!
Thank you sharing the recipe. Becoming Heart healthy is big deal for me after losing my mom to a massive heart attack. Thanks for the tips. I wish Tony a speedy recovery after his latest surgery.
You and Hannah are so photogenic. Cute pic of you two. That video is adorable. Wow dare I say you look just as youthful today. I always wanted a twin!
Tony looks a little scared. Those wound vacs do look a bit daunting but they work wonders. I’m sending lots of positive energy your way. Good luck Tony.
Oh and one last thing that parfait is gorgeous!
Ha, that pic of Tony cracks me up! š
I love that parfait, yum! You will kick ass at your endo appt., you are doing so great!
I love that video, priceless!
I’ve been reading you for a looong time and never saw that! You guys are adorable. And used to be so young, tee hee. (me too) Boy, that parfait looks great – I have to try that. I didn’t see mention of it but those are chocolate chips in there? I might have to omit them as a taste might cause a landslide. š
You can definitely leave the chocolate chips out Leslie š

That parfait looks Delicious!!!! O.K. you and your sister need your own comedy show, you two are hilarious. How fun to be on Oprah, I love and miss her.
This may not make sense because you are twins and all, but Hanna looks so much like your sister, it’s probably the side angle she was at.
I’m glad I already lunched; those pictures are amazing!
Those tips from CT are hilarious.
YOU WERE ON OPRAH?! That is so cool.
Also, I would eat the parfait you made everyday. It looks AMAZING.
I love that video of you two! So cute! And that picture of Tony made me laugh so hard I was snorting LOL
O M G, that clip is awesome!
I’ve never seen that video! So so cool.
And the “health” section in the newspaper always makes me laugh. The tips are usually the most obvious things.
Good luck with the diabetic appt today, and good luck to Tony!
oh my gosh! You two are SO cute in that video. Ah! I just love it. How cool. Your breakfast parfait is making me drool. I want one for lunch!
Good luck at your appointment! You have nothing to worry about of course. Your sweet little post about me just made my day. I just had a diabetic patient tell me, “No offense, I don’t listen to dietitians.” I wanted to say, “No offense, maybe that’s why you’re an amputee and on dialysis.” But, I didn’t. I needed your pick-me-up today…thanks, Biz!!! š P.S. The Oprah video is just as good the second time around š
I had not seen the Oprah appearance so thanks for sharing again. I wish I were more like you and not so camera shy. š
Totally random, but I think I have the same blanket on the floor in that last picture. haha.
And I love your Japanese food!!! Veggie rolls are my favorite!
Then you will be extra jealous because after my doctor appointment, I am stopping at a Japanese grocery store!
http://www.mitsuwa.com/tenpo/cica/eindex.html
AH! I’m jealous š
LOL on the tips – I don’t know if I agree with them though. I’ve heard that whole eggs are one of the best things you can eat, yolks and all? And maybe they should say, instead of the chips, eat a carrot! And instead of cake, eat some fruit or dark chocolate!
Good luck to Tony! And good luck at your diabetes appointment š
Thanks Maggie! Sorry you will be walking your half marathon instead of running it, but at least you are doing it! š
ha! loved the snippet from the Oprah show! How cool! and I love tony’s face in that picture! lol hope all goes well with the surgery!
Love Nicole too! one of my favs!
and ya, doesn’t it slay you how the masses must either be really stupid or the media just makes them out to be or the media is really stupid…cuz no duh to all those suggestions! lol
Ha! The video!!! I showed it to my friends at work and we just laugh and laugh!
Good times – love the outfits!
I am pretty sure we thought we were hot in those outfits! š
Sometimes those “new tips” for being healthy are just so silly. Who doesn’t know that skim is less cals than whole milk?
Good luck to Tony on his surgery! I’m thinking of you guys!
Good lord, I’d be worried too with the size of that thing!!! Tony is so funny – I’m sure he’s not thrilled with the thought of more surgery, but he does seem to still have his sense of humor, which helps so much.
On the realizing how old you are in relation to your child? Yeah, I’m there. Already thinking “when I was your age I was married and had YOU!” – so crazy!
Have a great weekend!
OMG, that picture of Tony with his package is HILARIOUS! You should bring the picture with you to the surgery to show your surgeon!
Also…even in all its hilarity….Tony looks healthier than he has in recent pics on your blog!
I agree! š
That pic of Tony is hysterical! heehee poor guy.
Does your yummy parfait have chocolate chips on it too? Want.Want.Want – especially if it has chocolate because that is soooo low in sodium and I am not a huge sugar fan, but needz my sweetz. š
Glad you are going to the Doc’. I am sure you are good.
Yes ma’am – chocolate chips make this granola!
http://mybizzykitchen.com/2011/12/24/winners-super-crunchy-granola/
I’ve seen that video before and it’s cute!
That parfait looks amazing! I think if it looks pretty it must taste better, too!
